Please be sure to check out my colleague Phil Ewing’s story on the fallout from a Naval Academy football player’s positive drug test. According to sources, the player claimed to not know that he was smoking marijuana, and was allowed to continue at the academy.
This has sparked some consternation among those associated with the academy, who wonder if an athlete is getting preferential treament, especially in light of the strict drug policy at the academy.
It was the latest example of what critics have said is a culture of special privilege at the Naval Academy for its star athletes, who are said to escape punishment for the same transgressions that get their classmates ejected. Many midshipmen — including even other members of the football team, according to one source — are “in an uproar” over the situation.
