Army needed this one if the Black Knights want to go to a bowl game this year. It was as much of a cupcake as Army is going to get this season. The win was made easier when North Texas had to turn to its third-string quarterback in the second quarter after the Mean Green lost second-string quarterback Derek Thompson to a broken leg.
Army starting quarterback Trent Steelman rushed for 68 yards and one touchdown. From the beginning, Army dominated the first half going back into the locker room with a 14-0 lead. North Texas’ offense was meager at best, totaling only 11 first downs.
Army next faces Duke. Don’t scoff. The Blue Devils have put together a decent program since David Cutcliffe arrived two years ago. They will probably get rolled this afternoon against Alabama, but most teams will this season.
Bottom line, three games into the season Army is on track to go to its first bowl game since 1996. Coach Rich Ellerson is gaining momentum for his program.
