More on aircraft carrier hoops plans

Full details of the basketball game in San Diego on an aircraft carrier on Veterans Day 2011 haven’t been released, but there already are plans afoot to hold the event in the following two years.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal this week that the Spartans could play on a carrier in 2012 and 2013.

“I think there’s value in playing all three, there’s value in playing every other year,” Hollis said in Tampa, Fla., awaiting Michigan State’s NCAA tournament opener on Thursday against UCLA. “I kind of want to see how it plays out, what the national acceptance of the event will be, and go from there.”

The game would be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 from a San Diego-based aircraft carrier.

The (San Diego) Union-Tribune reported Tuesday that the agreement is close to being done. Said Michael Rowe of Morale Entertainment, the promoter behind the idea: “We expect the game to be held for a number of years in San Diego, and we expect that, all things being equal, ESPN to carry it for a number of years.”
