Before you hit the couch for an evening of carrier-based hoops entertainment, check out the latest edition of “A Game of Honor” from CBS, then get briefed on Saturday’s academy football action (all times Eastern): Wyoming (5-3, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) at Air Force (5-4, 1-3 MWC), 2 p.m. TV: The mtn. (Todd Harris, Todd Christensen; DIRECTV channel 616, check here to find out whether your cable system carries it.) Not a misprint: Yes, perennial mountain-time-zone doormat Wyoming is above .500 in the MWC. In fact, with TCU on its way to the Big XII and Boise State rumored…

As unique sporting venues go, it’s tough to top basketball aboard a carrier, even if fresh air isn’t an option. But the flattop festivities in San Diego have overshadowed another classic off-site military matchup this weekend: Rutgers vs. Army football, at Yankee Stadium (3:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network). Far from unique, Army’s visits to the original Yankee Stadium were a yearly occurrence in the mid-20th century, and drew a little more attention than an afternoon slot on a cable network with a three-digit number. For example, take this highlight reel, apparently from the 1927 Army-Notre Dame game (tough to confirm…

The Black Knights and Falcons take over a national-TV slot vacated by some other game that’ll move to prime time. Home cooking: Army’s played four games away from West Point and lost all of them, allowing at least 35 points each time. What’s in…

As the rumblings of Navy and Air Force joining the Big East as football-only members become more than rumblings, some fans might wonder why Army has been the odd service academy out. Why wouldn’t the Black Knights want to become a football-only member of a conference without a regional identity? Well, it didn’t work last time. Army finished 10-2 in 1996, with a 10-1 regular-season record tarnished only by a road loss to Syracuse and an up-and-coming Chunky soup spokesman. The next year, the Black Knights announced they’d begin play in Conference USA in 1998. From 1998 to 2004, the…

Senior Max Jenkins gets the start, with freshman Angel Santiago expected to see some time under center. On the radar: Snow. Maybe. Forecasts call for the ever-popular “wintry…

Vince Lombardi will be forever linked to the NFL trophy that bears his name and the Wisconsin city where he crafted his NFL legacy. While the legend of Lombardi may begin in Green Bay, his time in football didn’t. When Army hosts Fordham on Saturday at West Point, two schools that helped shape the coach’s career square off in what would’ve been a marquee matchup when Lombardi was on the college gridiron. Lombardi was a member of the “Seven Blocks of Granite,” a nickname given to Fordham’s linemen in the 1929 and 1930 seasons and again in 1936-37. The second…

The longest string of consecutive starts by an Army quarterback in school history could end Saturday. Junior signal-caller Trent Steelman has started every game since arriving at West Point in 2009. But Saturday’s start No. 32, in a 44-21 loss to Vanderbilt, ended early thanks to an ankle injury shortly before halftime. Second on the team in rushing (behind sophomore Raymond Maples) and second to Kansas State’s Collin Klein in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (Klein has 14, Steelman 11), the junior’s not atop the Army depth chart for Saturday’s home game against Fordham. Steelman’s not even listed as a…
