Josh McNary finished his career at Army as West Point’s all-time sack king. Former Air Force cornerback Reggie Rembert was named first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association. But due in big part to the NFL lockout, neither had a chance this offseason to latch onto an NFL team the way predecessors like Eagles wide receiver and Air Force graduate Chad Hall did. NFL teams have invited service academy grads to offseason workouts even though team officials would have to wait two years before these players could finish their active-duty service commitments and play on Sundays. Former Air Force…

The NFL lockout is over so ESPN can mercifully retire the same photo of the locked gate holding back the dirty snow we saw over and over and over again. But this also means our favorite former service academy stars can return to the field and NFL teams can invite recent graduates who will try to catch a coach’s eye before returning to active duty. Sure, this is probably the lazy way to go but let’s see what the players are up to via the Twittersphere now that the NFL’s has announced that football’s back and we can go back…

<div class=”mceTemp mceIEcenter” style=”text-align: justify;”> Now that everyone has returned to their sad, pathetic lives that Lebron reminded us of last night, remember how this all started: At an Air Force base. It seems like five years ago, not last September, but who can forget the throngs of media invading the Air Force Special Operation Command’s quaint gym when the Miami Heat chose to have their training camp at Hurlburt Field, Fla.? Before Lebron James became the first player in Finals history ever ridiculed for tallying a triple-double, James got to work on  his post-up game at Aderholt Fitness Center.…

NFL ownership isn’t the most popular group right now. It’s tough for most Americans to sympathize with a group of billionaires who want more money even though their league is the  nation’s most popular. Many owners are worried NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will get booed Thursday night when he steps to the podium at the NFL draft to announce each team’s selections. Goddell is paid by the owners to oversee their league. Booing Goodell means the raucous crowd that attends the draft at Madison Square Garden supports the players. The owners can’t have that. Who or what can the owners…

The Washington Nationals have scrapped fireworks this year and begun celebrating homeruns and wins with a submarine horn. Makes sense for a baseball team whose stadium is not much further from the Washington Navy Yard than a Jayson Werth throw from right field. The Washington Post’s intrepid reporter Dan Steinberg has the story. Steinberg is incredible at tracking down the back story on most lingering sports questions you and a buddy might debate in the stands or sitting at a bar watching a game. “Wait, didn’t they used to have fireworks last year? What happened? Now, all I hears is…

Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo is fired up to have his Mids on national television tonight at 7 p.m. (AP photo) CBS Sports Network will roll the dice tonight with some interesting quirks to hopefully draw in more viewers to Navy’s Blue-Gold game broadcast at 7 p.m. Players will wear microphones, coaches will do fourth-quarter interviews and cameras will be present in the locker room.  We’re talking HBO Hard Knocks-level access, although I can imagine it won’t have the same production value. Wide receiver Doug Furman and cornerback Kwesi Mitchell will wear microphones throughout the game giving viewers a sense of…

Air Force Academy grad Ben Garland beat a block by Cougars offensive lineman Roy Watts during the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, Dec. 31, 2009. (U.S. Air Force photo) Air Force Academy grad and Denver Bronco defensive tackle Ben Garland chose to pass up on his pilot slot to give him a chance to play in the NFL, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette. Garland struggled with the decision after he was invited to Broncos training camp and played well last summer. He remains on their roster on the military/reserve list. “Being a pilot was my dream since…

Florida State forward and former airman Bernard James stars on tournament darling Florida State who plays VCU tonight at 9:57 p.m. EST on TBS. (AP photo) Other than Virginia Commonwealth University graduates all airmen have a rooting interest in Florida State in tonight’s March Madness docket. One of their own roams the paint for the Seminoles after finishing six years in the Air Force. Florida State forward Bernard James has transformed from an airmen into one of the leading defensive big men left in the NCAA tournament. A high school drop out, James took the long way to college basketball…
