PHILADELPHIA – Navy extended its winning streak to eight over its biggest rival after the Midshipmen beat Army 17-3 in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 12. Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs led the Mids back from a 3-point halftime deficit, rushing for one touchdown and throwing for another. His fourth quarter rushing touchdown, which gave him 24 for the season, broke the NCAA single-season record for a quarterback. Army’s defense led many to think the Black Knights might end their losing streak to Navy as they shut out the Midshipmen in the first half. The Mids owned the second half, though, as…

PHILADELPHIA — Bill the Goat and Army’s mule mascot — doesn’t that mule have a name? — got into something of a dust-up a few moments ago in Army’s end zone, and Bill attempted a flying wrap-around tackle. But Muley was having none of it, and Bill missed, landing on his face. He picked himself up and marched back toward the Navy sidelines, but not before the Army mule tried to kick him in his goat-tail — but he also missed.
Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs punched in Navy’s second touchdown of the afternoon with a 1-yard run. With that touchdown, Dobbs broke the NCAA single season record for touchdowns by a quarterback with 24. He eclipsed Florida quarterback Tim Tebow’s 23 touchdowns in 2007. The touchdown was set up by Navy linebacker Ross Pospisil, who stripped Army fullback Kingsley Ehie. Navy’s Craig Schaefer recovered the fumble and returned it to Army 11. That might have been the stake in Army’s upset chances. Looks like the losing streak will extend to eight for Army. The once delirious Corps of Cadets is now…
Navy had a chance to break Army’s back. Army kicker Alex Carlton missed a gimme to cut Navy’s lead to four in the fourth quarter. If Ricky Dobbs could have led a drive for Navy, it would have crushed Army’s spirits and might have put this game out of reach. But Army’s defense, which has played well all game, limited the Mids to a three-and-out. With less than 9 minutes to go, Army has a chance to drive for a touchdown and tie this game up. Meanwhile, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo has had a long meeting with two officials during…
PHILADELPHIA — It’s been a rough-and-tumble day for both teams, advancing by dribs and drabs with short, grappling plays up the middle of the field. A few minutes ago, Army was able to stop the Midshipmen and prompt Navy to bring out junior kicker Joe Buckley, number 16, who hit a 36 yard field goal to add three more points to Navy’s total. Now Army is trying to drive down the field; the Black Knights’ freshman quarterback Trent Steelman just found senior wide receiver Alejando Villanueva to bring up 1st down and 10.
PHILADELPHIA — When Navy scored its touchdown a few minutes ago, it brought up a really neat graphic on the inter-deck digital scoreboard between the field-level seats and the upper deck: A Ticonderoga-class cruiser sailed the length of the board, from about the 40-yard line to the 20-yard line, with a motivational message about Navy’s drive. Then it miraculously launched a Landing Craft, Air Cushion, which finished the journey, scoring the “touchdown,” presumably, by landing its Marines. That’s the kind of thing they’d probably like over on the Scoop Deck blog, from what I understand.
Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs connected with wide receiver Marcus Curry for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Dobbs froze the Army defensive backs with play action and lofted the ball to a wide open Curry. The touchdown followed a drive where Dobbs marched Navy down the field with his feet and his arm. He threw a 15-yard pass to Bobby Doyle and the long run of the drive of eight yards. It’s a bad sign for Army if Dobbs gets into a rhythm.
PHILADELPHIA — A Navy marching band just finished an inexplicable medley of “Batman” themes, the players are stretching and getting ready for the second half, and we’re high up here in the crystal tower talking about the first half of this football match. Military Times senior sportswriter Mike Hoffman had some thoughts about what we’ve seen so far and what could be coming up:
A hard-hitting and sometimes sloppy first half is over, and Army leads 3-0. Here’s some thoughts and observations from deep inside the Military Times HQ in Virginia: Somebody on Navy has gotta help Ricky Dobbs out. Two huge holding penalties negated beautiful Dobbs’ passes that would have changed the storyline in the first half. Outside of Dobbs, the Mids running game can’t get going either. The man needs someone to step up. Army’s defense is stuffing the fullback. Navy’s Vince Murray, the second-most important cog in Navy’s ground attack, has only nine yards on the ground and one fumble. Army’s…
