Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz is in Norman, Okla., this afternoon to see if his alma mater can pull its second upset in a row against Oklahoma. The Falcons knocked off BYU last weekend. He is there to celebrate the Air Force’s 63rd birthday. Schwartz is a football fan. On a recent trip with Schwartz to Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., he told me he follows the Falcons throughout the season. He’s also become a bit of a Washington Redskins fan after all the year’s he’s spent in the nation’s capital.

It’s hard to tell Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson is the starting signal caller for a Division 1 FBS team, and has been since his freshman year. Maybe it’s a misperception, but you expect a certain level of braggadocio. It’s missing when you sit down with Jefferson inside his dorm on the Colorado Springs, Colo., campus. “You wouldn’t know he is the starting quarterback if you walked past him on the street. He is just so humble,” said a master sergeant working at the Air Force Academy. That comment took me by surprise because enlistees working at the academy don’t…

It was a scary scene Saturday not just for Air Force cornerback Reggie Rembert’s senior season, but his future as an Air Force officer when we was carted off the field with a neck injury. Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said Rembert will undergo further neurological tests and said he was a “long shot” to play Saturday. Rembert’s replacement stepped in and held his own against Northwestern State, but BYU is not Northwestern State and the Falcons chances of pulling off the upset decrease dramatically if Rembert, who was voted to the All-Mountain West preaseason team, isn’t in there. After…

It’s June, still two months before the 2010 college football season starts, but anytime a service academy gets ranked above Notre Dame, After Action will boast about it. Sure, sure, we know Navy and Air Force ended last season ranked higher than Notre Dame, but it’s still fun to kick a dog when it’s down. Lindy’s isn’t ESPN or Sports Illustrated, but it’s still a respected sports magazine. They released their 2010 pre-season rankings with Navy 44th and Notre Dame 49th. Lindy’s rankings also predict a relatively easy schedule for the Midshipmen — with Notre Dame being the highest-ranked team…

En garde! The Air Force is thrusting and parrying its way to the top of the U.S. Fencing Association’s national rankings. Not only is 2003 Academy grad Seth Kelsey the top men’s epee fencer in the nation, but three current cadets are in the top 60: senior Peter French (#5), junior Daniel Trapani (#47) and sophomore Ben Rinaldi (#57). Kelsey, now a reservist, has competed in the last two Summer Olympics. In women’s epee, sophomore Simone Barrette is tied for 21st in senior women’s epee and is also ranked 17th in junior women’s epee. Freshman Heather Nelson currently is ranked…

Late last night, after USC announced it had hired former Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin to take over the football program Pete Carroll had left, speculation immediately turned to who would take over for Kiffin. That’s where Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun comes into the picture. Before Tennessee hired Kiffin, Calhoun was a finalist for the job. As Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel tweeted last night, Calhoun was next in line. With the head coaching position again open, will Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton turn to Calhoun? Since Calhoun has returned to his alma mater in 2007, he has led…
