Sunday’s post from the sidelines of a close Army-Navy game may have had history on its side, but it lacked a bit in drama. And color. And focus. And … well, it was 1911 — sports photography has improved a bit over the past 100 years. Case in point, two shots from Military Times staff photographer Mike Morones from the sidelines of the 2011 Army-Navy game: The 27-21 Navy win marked the 10th straight for Annapolis. Senior fullback Alexander Teich (the jumper in the top pic) had 93 yards on 18 carries in his last collegiate game. The contest was…

If you’re tuning in late, a quick recap: Yes, President Obama is in attendance at FedEx Field. And no, he didn’t sign an executive order banning the forward pass. Army tried one in the first quarter, with Trent Steelman throwing wildly to the opposite side of the field after faking a more-traditional option. Navy’s first real attempt went better, mostly because QB Kriss Proctor never bothered throwing the ball. Proctor dropped back early in the second quarter, took his time surveying his options, then did what he’s more accustomed to doing — tucking the ball and running. Behind the right…
It was a bad weekend for the service academy football teams. Very bad. Army lost to previously winless Miami (Ohio). Air Force got smoked by Notre Dame. Navy was trounced at home by Southern Miss. And on top of all of that, the military’s biggest MMA star — former Marine officer and Silver Star recipient Brian Stann — was soundly defeated Saturday night at UFC 136. Stann handled The only of the above events I watched was Stann’s loss, which was somewhat stunning. It wasn’t surprising that Stann lost — he was the underdog — but it was shocking to see Chael…
Senior fullback Alexander Teich is one of the most potent weapons the Naval Academy has on offense. Unfortunately, they’ll be without him for their upcoming game against Southern Mississippi. Bill Wagner at the Annapolis Capital reported after practice Thursday that he will not play against the Golden Eagles, but noted that he is not suspended. Here’s a quote from Niumatalolo on the situation, via The Capital: “I’m not sure what the situation is with Alex right now. Just from the standpoint, he’s not here at practice,” Niumatalolo said. “There’s some things that Alex needs to take care of. To…
Alexander Teich had the game of his life against Notre Dame, rushing for a career-high 210 yards and scoring on a well-executed 31-yard screen pass that helped set the tone for Navy’s 35-17 win against the Fighting Irish. Teich started this season as the backup fullback to Vince Murray, who took Teich’s starting job last year after he got hurt. When Murray went down with a knee injury in the Wake Forest game Oct. 9, the 217-pound Teich stepped in, and he’s made the most of his opportunity. Teich has had four touchdowns in the last three games (two rushing,…
First, some encouraging words for the demoralized Notre Dame fanbase. Here’s a healthy attitude to take in the wake of Saturday’s 35-17 drubbing at the hands of Navy: It’s really not that embarrassing for you guys to lose to the Midshipmen. Really, it’s not. Impossible as it may seem, Navy is just the better program right now. Don’t be any more upset about this loss than you would be after losing to Michigan. Navy isn’t anyone’s punching bag anymore. The Mids go to bowl games. They win bowl games. They beat their rivals. They graduate star players and don’t miss a…
Navy beat Georgia Southern 13-7 on Saturday and Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, and from the sound of things, it was not a pretty game from an offensive standpoint. But a win is a win, especially for a Navy squad coming off a short week of preparation. Those kind of weeks can throw a team off — just ask Virginia Tech.
