What Falcons and Black Knights fans need to know as Air Force fights for bowl eligibility and Army attempts to pull a home upset. Who, where, when: Air Force (5-3, 4-1 Mountain West Conference) at Army (1-7), Saturday, noon Eastern. TV: CBS Sports Network (Ben Holden and Randy Cross have the call). Gambling is illegal in most states: Air Force is a 7.5-point favorite. Would Air Force coach Troy Calhoun agree with that line?: Probably not, given all of Army’s advantages. Air Force’s advantages: David Ramsay at The (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Gazette has the stats — Air Force has beaten…

The basics from both sides as Navy and Air Force kick off the quest for the 2012 Commander in Chief’s Trophy. Who, where, when: Navy (1-3) at Air Force (2-2, 1-1 Mountain West Conference), Saturday, 9:30 a.m. Mountain time (11:30 a.m. Eastern). Wait, when? Yes, 11:30 a.m. Part of a CBS-TV doubleheader that includes Florida at LSU at 3:30 p.m. Eastern. (Spero Dedes and Steve Beuerlein have the call from Colorado Springs.) Gambling is illegal in most states: Air Force is an eight-point favorite. The last time: Navy overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the 2011…

Two Democrats yesterday. And in the interest of equal time, two Republicans today (we’re not counting Gen. Eisenhower, if you’re scoring at home): Here, President Bush poses with Navy’s Reggie Campbell, left, and Irv Spencer during an April 14, 2008, ceremony in the Rose Garden. Skipping the traditional personalized jersey, the pair presented the president with a cowboy hat. The ceremony, celebrating Navy’s 2007 Commander in Chief’s Trophy win, came in the midst of a seven-year CINC streak for the Mids, which Air Force ended in 2010. The yearly trophy presentation wasn’t always as lavish or as reliably recorded for…

One side effect to football season, at least every four years: Somebody insists on holding an election. This year, the Republican National Convention will conclude the same day the college football season begins. And by the time Navy and Air Force kick off Sept. 1, the Democrats will be trickling into Charlotte for their gathering. Where do politics and academy football intersect? Why, at the top, of course: Here, President Obama shakes hands with Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson during an April 23 ceremony in the East Room of the White House. At the ceremony, Obama presented the Falcons with…

For the first time since 2002, the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy will not be residing in Annapolis, Md. Air Force, who beat Navy 14-6 earlier this season, completed the service academy sweep Saturday at Army, beating the Black Knights 42-22. Junior quarterback Tim Jefferson accounted for four touchdowns — two rushing, two passing — for the Falcons, who also became bowl-eligible with the win. Navy had held the CIC Trophy since taking it from Air Force seven seasons ago.  According to The (Colorado Springs) Gazette, the trophy will be picked up from Annapolis on Sunday and arrive on Air Force’s campus sometimes this…

Update: The Zoomies found tracked down the clip of the West Point cadet who had a few too many Red Bulls before going on Wheel of Fortune. For some reason the service academies have really latched onto these Geico commercial spoofs. I can’t stand them, frankly. But it’s the first spirit spot I’ve seen thus far for this weekend’s Army vs. Air Force game that will go a long way in deciding who wins this year’s Commander-In-Chief’s trophy. I am collecting Army vs. Air Force Spirit Spots and as always will post those e-mailed to mhoffman@atpco.com. At the…

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz is still relishing Air Force’s 14-6 victory against Navy. The Air Force chief of staff – a big football fan who follows the Academy and the Washington Redskins – was discussing his military career with a crowd of federal-government employees Wednesday when he broke away to talk sports. “Some days are better than others at this job, but the truth is both Suzie and I are having fun,” he said. “An example: being on the field with [Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm.] Mike Mullen last Saturday at Navy-Air Force game …” Schwartz stopped…

It’s hard to tell Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson is the starting signal caller for a Division 1 FBS team, and has been since his freshman year. Maybe it’s a misperception, but you expect a certain level of braggadocio. It’s missing when you sit down with Jefferson inside his dorm on the Colorado Springs, Colo., campus. “You wouldn’t know he is the starting quarterback if you walked past him on the street. He is just so humble,” said a master sergeant working at the Air Force Academy. That comment took me by surprise because enlistees working at the academy don’t…
