The final three service academy graduates battling to make NFL teams were all released Saturday ahead of the league’s mandatory deadline for cutting squads to 53 players. The Eagles cut Air Force grad Chad Hall, New England cut Navy grad Eric Kettani and Detroit parted ways with Army grad Caleb Campbell. But the news isn’t all bad. Hall, who led the Eagles in receiving in the preseason, will be signed to the Philadelphia practice squad, according to Philly.com. And Kettani, who missed much of the Patriots training camp with an injury, is a strong candidate to be signed to the New…

Collin Mooney is going to get his shot. The second lieutenant stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma received a call from the Detroit Lions today inviting him to come up to Michigan for a workout, the Detroit News reported. “I’ve been waiting for two years now to get that call,” Mooney told the Detroit News. “I’m very excited about it and I’m very appreciative that they’re giving me the opportunity. I just want to get in there and play a football game and see if I can make the team. If it doesn’t work out with Detroit, hopefully this is a…
The Boston Herald is reporting that two former Naval Academy standouts are expected to be joining the New England Patriots very soon. Wide receiver Tyree Barnes and running back Eric Kettani — each commissioned as officers in 2009 — will be reporting to Patriots headquarters in Foxboro, Mass., this week, according to the paper. Barnes and Kettani both served the mandatory two years on active-duty that the Defense Department requires of service academy graduates seeking to play professional sports. Both players, along with fellow class of 2009 grad Shun White, were kept on New England’s Reserve/Military list the past two…
Former Army standout Caleb Campbell has been signed to the Detroit Lions 53-man roster, The Detroit Free Press is reporting. This marks the second time this season that Campbell, a linebacker, has been called up from the Lions practice squad. He was activated for Detroit’s game at Dallas on Nov. 21, but did not see any action in that game, a 35-19 loss. The Lions (3-10), who snapped a five-game losing streak last week in a win against Green Bay, travel to Tampa on Sunday to play the Bucs (8-5).
Former Army standout Caleb Campbell is likely headed back to the Detroit Lions’ practice squad after he was cut from the active 53-man roster, according to a post on Campbell’s Twitter account. “Back to practice squad for the week if I clear waivers.great experience in Dallas and ill be back. That’s for sure. #fueledbyfaith as always,” Campbell tweeted. Campbell didn’t see any action Sunday in the Lions’ loss at Dallas after being activated Saturday off the team’s practice squad. He was the first West Point alum to join an NFL team’s active roster in over a decade. Campbell will have…
Army Lt. Caleb Campbell has been signed to the Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster and has made the trip with the team to Dallas for their matchup with the Cowboys, the Detroit Free Press is reporting. Campbell will be active for the game and likely will see time on special teams. Campbell, a 2008 West Point graduate, is the second service academy graduate to play in the NFL this season. Chad Hall, a 2008 graduate of the Air Force Academy, was promoted from the Eagles practice squad earlier this season, and has appeared in three games. Campbell served two years on active duty…
Detroit Lions linebacker Caleb Campbell is the only former active-duty soldier in the NFL. Most people know his story: He graduated from West Point in 2008 and was drafted by the Lions, but the Army prevented him attending training camp after initially allowing it. Campbell, an artillery officer, served two years before leaving the Army earlier this summer to pursue a career in pro football. Campbell is still with the Lions, but his job security is as tenuous as it gets in the NFL. As a member of the practice squad, Campbell is essentially auditioning every day. Even if he…
It started out with so much promise. Air Force 1st Lt. Chad Hall peppered the highlight shows hauling down long passes as Philadelphia Eagles coaches lavished praise on one of three service academy alums competing in NFL training camps this summer. However, the harsh reality of the NFL is starting to catch up to the three lieutenants now that most NFL teams have finished three preseason games and coaches have to make hard decisions over who will end up on their 53-man rosters. Right now, it doesn’t look too good for Hall, Army 1st Lt. Caleb Campbell and Air Force…
By all accounts Lt. Caleb Campbell is struggling to catch up with the speed of the NFL while also trying to learn a new position in his first NFL training camp. Drafted out of West Point as a safety two years ago, Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has moved Campbell to weak side linebacker. Fellow linebacker Zack Follet, who was on the receiving end last year, said Campbell is getting an earful from Cunningham. “I definitely would not wish that on anybody,” Follett told Mlive.com. “Caleb Campbell is in the exact same position as I was last year. He’s a…
Barring some unforeseen disaster, Army 1st Lt. Caleb Campbell will play his first NFL game when he runs out onto the field Saturday for the Detroit Lion’s first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s a huge step for a guy that spent the last two years on active duty in the Army and far, far away from the world of professional football. Campbell did a few interviews recently where he said he kept his distance by choice. While the former 7th-round draft pick had no say in his NFL dream being abruptly put on hold by the Army in…
