Navy walked off the football field a loser for the first time in seven years Saturday. This might do little to console the Mids, but the votes were counted over the weekend and Navy’s submission to this year’s Old Spice war came out as this year’s Spirit Spot of the year. It works on so many levels. Nothing is worse than having witty zingers delivered by a shirtless Mid. It’s just emasculating. Second, it’s timely. Those Old Spice commercials kill After Action every time. And after watching these Mids’ spoof, Old Spice would be wise to try and capitalize…

There’s really no other way to describe this than a total beat-down. The Black Knights led 35-7 entering the fourth quarter and never really were challenged. Now Army has an above-.500 record entering October for the first time in 14 years. For more details on the game, click here. Below: Some photos from Saturday’s game.

Navy has a bye this week, so they made this easier. And it’s tough to call Air Force vs. Wyoming the game of the week after the Falcons nearly upset the 7th-ranked Sooners in Norman, Okla., last weekend. If we at After Action were on top of our game we would have started this weekly special last week with that match-up, but … Anyway, that leaves Army and their pivotal game against Duke. Stop laughing. Duke is for real. Yes, Alabama steamrolled them last week, making the Blue Devils look like a high school team, which is funny because their…

A quick look at the weekend’s games. • AIR FORCE (2-1) has to rebound from last week’s gut-wrenching loss at Oklahoma, and a trip to Wyoming (2 p.m. Eastern) is on the docket. (Good luck finding the game on TV, unless you have a dish and can pull in The Mtn., the Mountain West Conference’s TV network.) Wyoming (1-2) hasn’t even averaged two touchdowns per game this season — and is giving up 35 a game —while Air Force is averaging 41.3 points per game, second in the Mountain West and 16th in Division I. And the Falcons’ 399 yards…

It’s hard to tell Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson is the starting signal caller for a Division 1 FBS team, and has been since his freshman year. Maybe it’s a misperception, but you expect a certain level of braggadocio. It’s missing when you sit down with Jefferson inside his dorm on the Colorado Springs, Colo., campus. “You wouldn’t know he is the starting quarterback if you walked past him on the street. He is just so humble,” said a master sergeant working at the Air Force Academy. That comment took me by surprise because enlistees working at the academy don’t…

I’m a bit surprised more hasn’t been made about Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo’s encounter with a ref at halftime during Monday’s game with Maryland. Navy’s coach was visibly upset after the clock ran out before he could get his field goal team on the field. It appears from the video above that Niumatalolo angrily bumps his hat against the ref’s forehead, gritting his teeth with a crazed look in his eyes. Navy was not penalized for the encounter when the second half started. It’s surprising, though, there have been no reports that any NCAA governing body is reviewing the…

By all accounts Lt. Caleb Campbell is struggling to catch up with the speed of the NFL while also trying to learn a new position in his first NFL training camp. Drafted out of West Point as a safety two years ago, Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has moved Campbell to weak side linebacker. Fellow linebacker Zack Follet, who was on the receiving end last year, said Campbell is getting an earful from Cunningham. “I definitely would not wish that on anybody,” Follett told Mlive.com. “Caleb Campbell is in the exact same position as I was last year. He’s a…

Want to catch an early glimpse of quarterback Ricky Dobbs’ run to Navy’s first Heisman Trophy since Roger Staubach? Navy released its preseason practice schedule as Coach Ken Niumatalolo gets the Midshipmen ready for the upcoming season. The annual Blue & Gold game will be held on Aug. 14 in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Aug. 20 and 27 scrimmages will be closed to the public as Niumatalolo fine-tunes his game plan for the Labor Day opener against Maryland. Navy is an early 7-point favorite against the Terps. Full schedule after the jump.

It’s June, still two months before the 2010 college football season starts, but anytime a service academy gets ranked above Notre Dame, After Action will boast about it. Sure, sure, we know Navy and Air Force ended last season ranked higher than Notre Dame, but it’s still fun to kick a dog when it’s down. Lindy’s isn’t ESPN or Sports Illustrated, but it’s still a respected sports magazine. They released their 2010 pre-season rankings with Navy 44th and Notre Dame 49th. Lindy’s rankings also predict a relatively easy schedule for the Midshipmen — with Notre Dame being the highest-ranked team…

Late last night, after USC announced it had hired former Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin to take over the football program Pete Carroll had left, speculation immediately turned to who would take over for Kiffin. That’s where Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun comes into the picture. Before Tennessee hired Kiffin, Calhoun was a finalist for the job. As Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel tweeted last night, Calhoun was next in line. With the head coaching position again open, will Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton turn to Calhoun? Since Calhoun has returned to his alma mater in 2007, he has led…
