Army freshman Garrett Thul is getting some major recognition for his outstanding rookie campaign. Thul was named Freshman of the Year by InsideLacrosse.com, the first Black Knight to ever receive that honor. To quote our vice president, this is a big f#@!*%& deal. Thul, who already earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, beat out a bunch of highly recruited studs from Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Syracuse, Cornell and other traditional lax powerhouses. Not much was expected from this Army lacrosse team, especially after its deflating loss to Air Force to end a four-game losing streak early this season. A run to the Patriot League Championship and an upset over No. 2 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in the first round of the NCAA Tournament didn’t seem possible. Army barely held onto what was once a six goal second half lead to beat Lafayette and clinch the top seed in next week’s Patriot League Tournament. The Leopards outscored the Black Knights 9-3 in the second half, but didn’t have enough in the tank to overtake Army, who sneaked by with a 15-14 win. Junior attackman Jeremy Boltus led the Black Knights with a career high eight points notching three goals and five assists.
