We had a fourth-down stand, a fumble recovery and two honest-to-goodness punts in the second quarter, but the offenses are still the story. Air Force opened the second quarter with a 12-play, 79-yard drive that took more than five minutes, even with the no-huddle attack favored by both teams. After five straight up-the-middle runs near the goal line, Falcons quarterback Tim Jefferson pitched wide to Asher Clark for a 1-yard score that tied the game at 21. Toledo followed with a 51-yard strike from Terrance Owens to Bernard Reedy; the duo’s second touchdown of the day made it 28-21. Air…

It took the offenses a few minutes, but once they geared up, the expected Military Bowl shootout took off. Aspiring defensive coordinators, avert your eyes now. After a Toledo missed field goal and a fourth-down “quick kick” by Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson (for about 15 yards), the Rockets scored 14 points in less than 30 seconds: A 17-yard scoring strike from Terrance Owens to Bernard Reedy was followed by an Air Force fumble on the kickoff, then a 41-yard scoring scamper by Adonis Thomas over left end. And the hits keep coming! Jonathan Warzeka takes the counter-option and busts it loose for a sick 60-yard run. Mike DeWitt scores on the ensuing play, on a 3-yard run. 1:36 left in the first quarter. If you believe in friendly wagers, I hope you had the over.

Air Force came through on a key fourth-and-1 conversion on its own side of midfield, then Tim Jefferson turned third-and-13 into a 22-yard touchdown run. It’s his 33rd rushing touchdown at Air Force, his 11th in 2011. The Falcons also benefitted from a pass interference call in the end zone.
