The Falcons find themselves down 7-0 just after the midway point of the first quarter, and they’ve already turned the ball over. Toledo scored with 6:38 left in the period when Terrance Owens hit Bernard Reedy on a 17-yard touchdown pass. And Air Force has fumbled the ensuing kickoff, too. Keep it here for updates.

Stuck at your desk? Home on the couch? Three things you’re missing at RFK Stadium this afternoon as kickoff nears, aside from a picture-perfect parachute jump from the The Ranger Group’s all-veteran parachute team: 1. Brief weather report: Cold. Back to you in the studio. 2. Crowd: Could charitably be described as “late-arriving.” Some areas of the upper deck are caution-taped off, the lower levels are less than half full, and the hottest ticket appears to be the heated VIP/reception tent behind the Air Force end zone. 3. Signage: The traditional sports sponsors (Geico, Wendy’s, FedEx) and event sponsor (Northrop…

Check the scoreboard lights: RFK Stadium will host two of the nation’s top-20 offenses, with Toledo checking in at No. 8 (493 yards per game) and Air Force at No. 19 (458.83). Live in the Washington D.C. region and want to watch the Air Force Falcons up close? Air Force coach Troy Calhoun keeps his team’s practices open to the public and with the team playing in this year’s Military Bowl, Calhoun will relocate Air Force’s practices to D.C. for four days starting Dec. 23. The team will use the fields at St John’s College High School, which is on the D.C.-Maryland border by Chevy Chase. Calhoun’s policy of keeping practice open to the public flies in the face of most NCAA coaches, who close practice for fear of other teams sending…

At the start of the college football season, the Military Bowl had commitments from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Naval Academy, and a deal with Conference USA should the Midshipmen fall short of bowl eligibility. At the end of the season, the bowl has exactly zero teams from the ACC or C-USA, and Navy won’t be playing anywhere after this weekend. Yet, somehow, everybody’s happy. Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette has the details behind the seemingly simple steps that put Air Force in the Dec. 28 bowl game at RFK Stadium in Washington, where the Falcons will…

With a 27-24 road loss to San Jose State this past Saturday, Navy (4-7) will miss a bowl for the first time since 2002, former coach Paul Johnson’s first year at the Academy. The Mids will close out the 2011 season at the traditional Army-Navy game on Dec. 10 at Fedex Field in Landover, Md. While this news is disheartening for Midshipman fans, it’s also a blow for the Military Bowl. As shown in the top image above, the organizers originally had Navy playing an ACC opponent. Now the website has nothing at the top of the page about who will be…

The coach who took his team to a bowl game and is getting the worst deal this season is Ralph Friedgen. Not even two weeks after he was named ACC Coach of the Year, Maryland tossed Fridge aside, amid rumors Craig James had let Mike Leach out of the locked tool shed. I guess they forgot about the bad old Mark Duffner/Ron Vanderlinden days in College Park. Friedgen will be on the sidelines a week from today for the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium as Maryland faces East Carolina. Proceeds from the game, the third annual bowl game at RFK,…

America’s service men and women already have a bowl game named in their honor: the Armed Forces Bowl. Since there are roughly 7,658 college football bowl games, why not add another? It was only a matter of time before a defense contractor stepped in to sponsor the bowl game played in Washington, D.C. at RFK Stadium. With all the defense dollars floating around this town, it only made sense. Northrop Grumman will partner with the USO to host the former Eagle Bank Bowl game, which has been renamed the Military Bowl. Those who make a donation to the USO can…
