West Point has agreed to a two-year contract extension for football coach Rich Ellerson, who’s resurrected the program after a decade of misery. Terms of the extension, which keeps Ellerson under contract until 2015, have not been made public. This season Ellerson, in his season year with the team, has led the Cadets to their most successful season since 1996. They’ve won six games and qualified for a bowl — two things that past coaches Todd Berry, Bobby Ross and Stan Brock never came close to accomplishing. At 6-5, Army still has a shot at finishing with a winning season.…

Army coach Rich Ellerson faced his alma mater Saturday at West Point when Hawaii, the school where Ellerson also got his coaching start, made the absurdly long trip for a 1 p.m. game at West Point. Ellerson saw his squad score four straight touchdowns to storm back from a 21-0 second quarter deficit, but unfortunately for Ellerson and the Black Knights, the Warriors tied the game up and then kicked the winning field goal with seven seconds left to play to win 31-28. The last 30 seconds of this heartbreaker featured a fumble by backup quarterback Max Jenkins, a (questionable)…

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Don’t expect Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun to be confined to 140 characters. He told the Colorado Springs Gazette that, unlike other Mountain West coaches, he will not start his own Twitter account, but he will not ban his players from starting their own. The Air Force football team has its own Twitter account, although @AFFalcons is leaving its 17 followers wanting more with only 19 tweets in the past year. Army football coach Rich Ellerson has his own Twitter account, but someone might want to tell him. @RichEllerson has 12 followers, even though he…

Army quarterback Trent Steelman had an unspecified honor code violation recently, but is expected to start the season with the rest of the Black Knights on Sept. 4 at Eastern Michigan, according to a report by the Times Herald-Record. A cadet honor board recommended discretion for the violation, rather than separation, the paper said. “To be honest, it’s helped me on the field, just dealing with adversity because being put in that situation, it brings every type of challenge there is in life,” Steelman, a sophomore, told the paper. “For me to go through that, it did. It helped me…

Army Coach Rich Ellerson ushered in 55 new recruits to his reconstruction project at West Point. Of the 55 plebes, 27 are straight out of high school while the other 28 spent last year at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School. You won’t find the same five-star stand outs on a Florida or Alabama roster, but Ellerson is hoping to find those less heralded players in high school, which Army and Air Force have unearthed to build up their football programs. One standout which Army fans can get excited about is 6-2, 270-pound center Shelby Jackson, who Ellerson foresees as…
