Ten quick hits to recap a busy weekend aboard two decommissioned aircraft carriers and a damp gator. 1. The games that finished: To minimal fanfare and with a relatively dry court, Notre Dame’s women’s team defeated the Ohio State women 57-51 on the decommissioned aircraft carrier Yorktown in Charleston, S.C., on Friday afternoon to begin what was supposed to be a four-game weekend shipboard slate. On Sunday in San Diego, the Syracuse men easily dispatched San Diego State 62-49 aboard the decommissioned carrier Yorktown. Between those games, things got interesting. 2. The first washout: The Ohio State and Marquette men…

Are you a fan of early-season college basketball? Of camouflage-themed uniform designs? Of playing basketball on multiple warships, active and decommissioned? Or playing overseas, at odd times, to placate television audiences? If so, this is your lucky week. On Friday, five college hoops games with a military feel will be played in less than eight hours  — four games on ships, one game on a base in Germany. Here’s a breakdown of who’s playing who where this Friday: (UPDATE: West Coast game moved to Sunday because of weather concerns) Armed Forces Classic Presented by: Sears Who: No. 14 Michigan State…

The “Battle on the Midway” college basketball game set for Nov. 9 on a decommissioned aircraft carrier in San Diego was supposed to be the centerpiece of a Veterans Day weekend celebration, including a charity concert, a fan fest and a fancy dinner. Now, all of the surrounding events have been canceled, according to a U-T San Diego report, and the game itself could vanish next. The contest between Syracuse and San Diego State, to be held in a 4,000-seat temporary stadium aboard the Midway, is not sold out, according to the report. The U-T says the $1,000-a-seat tickets have…

What Army fans need to know as the Black Knights dip into the Football Bowl Subdivision in search of their first win. Who, where, when: Stony Brook (3-1) at Army (0-3), Saturday, noon Eastern. TV: CBS Sports Network (Ben Holden and Randy Cross have the call). Trend: Air Force’s first win came against an FCS opponent in the Falcons’ home opener. Navy’s first win came against an FCS opponent in the Mids’ home opener. This will be Army’s second home game of the year — kicking off a three-game homestand — but the first against an FCS school. Counterpoint: Stony…

NBC Sports Network: Your home for basketball on ships. The Navy/Marine Corps Classic, which will feature the Georgetown and Florida men’s basketball teams playing Nov. 9 on the deck of the amphibious assault ship Bataan at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., will air on NBCSN at 9 p.m., GatorSports.com and other Florida-centric websites reported Tuesday. That’ll put the game on the same network as the Carrier Classic doubleheader being held that same day on the decommissioned aircraft carrier Yorktown at Charleston, S.C. In fact, if the network keeps to its Carrier Classic schedule, it’ll be a tripleheader of shipboard action –…

Five football updates as the season approaches. Count down with us, won’t you? 1. Falcons on the Web. Don’t bother checking your local listings for the Air Force-Idaho State game Sept. 1: It’ll be available online-only after talks broke off with a regional sports network, according to The (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Gazette. Last year’s opener against South Dakota State was broadcast, along with many of the Falcons’ contests, on The Mtn., a regional sports network that went off the air earlier this year. Air Force will continue to pursue broadcast deals for two other home games without TV clearance, according…

A few quick links to today’s news while our picture-a-day countdown helps you remember the good ol’ days. The really, really ol’ days. MRI for Navy WR. Junior Matt Aiken was scheduled to have his right knee looked at after injuring it during Saturday’s Blue-Gold scrimmage, The Washington Post reports. Aiken, tops on the depth chart at wideout, was second on the team in both receptions (13) and yards (201) last season. Ahead of him in both categories was fellow wideout Brandon Turner, who’s missing time for a different reason; Turner’s not on the depth chart. Falcons fall silent. What…

Cold Warriors, stand down. Despite recent reports, the U.S. remains ahead of the Russians when it comes to the next generation of naval warfare — namely, hosting sporting events on aircraft carriers. English-language all-Russian-news site RT.com reported Monday that the Major Hockey League, which is actually a minor hockey league (those wacky Russians) to the big-time KHL, is planning to hold a game on a flattop anchored in the Gulf of Finland. The host team would be HC VMS St. Petersburg, the Russian navy’s official hockey club, according to the report. No date is set, no opponent is named, and…

A few service academy-related football notes to start off your week: 1. Praise from high places: We promised you updates on Air Force 2nd Lt. Ben Garland’s quest for an NFL job with the Denver Broncos, so we pass this along from Frank Schwab at The (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Gazette. Denver head coach John Fox offered some short remarks on Garland’s stellar work ethic during a post-rookie workout news conference late last week. Judging from the picture in that first link, the Air Force Academy grad’s strength and conditioning won’t be an issue. 2. Conference calamity: Speaking of early outs,…

Not much was expected from this Army lacrosse team, especially after its deflating loss to Air Force to end a four-game losing streak early this season. A run to the Patriot League Championship and an upset over No. 2 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in the first round of the NCAA Tournament didn’t seem possible. The fairy tale run came to an end, though, at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium after Army fell to Cornell 14-5. Cornell scored the first four goals to establish a lead they never relinquished and continually squashed any momentum Army could muster in front…
