Even if you’re not a football fan, or you’re forward-deployed, or you’re in a submarine under the Pacific with your fingers in your ears humming “Anchors Aweigh” as loud as you can, you’ve probably heard the news: Quarterback/attention magnet Tim Tebow has been dealt from Denver to the New York Jets (probably) to make way for another quarterback of note. Even before Peyton Manning forced his latest PCS move, Tebow couldn’t help but make headlines for some reason or another. But one of his recent endeavors didn’t get much press: a visit to a wounded warrior in Florida as part…

Gunslingin’ quarterback Jeff George is making a comeback — again. No, not with the Colts, Raiders or Redskins — but instead on a field where his talents can do the most good. George, an Indianapolis native,  is set to play in a Feb. 1 flag football game pitting military amputees against former NFL players. The game will benefit Wounded Warrior Amputees (if you’re in the Indy area and want to check it out, tickets are $20 and can be purchased here). George has tight military connections, with his brother-in-law and father-in-law both Army officers. The quarterback played for several NFL…

Our Gannett brothers over at the Louisville Courier-Journal produced the video below and wrote a story last week about the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. Detroit Lions linebacker Caleb Campbell is the only former active-duty soldier in the NFL. Most people know his story: He graduated from West Point in 2008 and was drafted by the Lions, but the Army prevented him attending training camp after initially allowing it. Campbell, an artillery officer, served two years before leaving the Army earlier this summer to pursue a career in pro football. Campbell is still with the Lions, but his job security is as tenuous as it gets in the NFL. As a member of the practice squad, Campbell is essentially auditioning every day. Even if he…

Double-amputee Kevin Pannell snowboards toward a ski instructor through a half pipe Jan. 29 in Vail, Colo. Pannell, from Portland, Ore., lost both legs in a grenade attack when his Army patrol was ambushed by Iraqi insurgents in 2004. He was part of a group of a dozen war wounded and their families participating in the Vail Veterans Program winter ski retreat. The program is designed to help severely wounded U.S. service members rehabilitate and rebuild confidence through learning to ski and snowboard. Some of the wounded are flown in directly from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.…
