1. Navy (6-2): It wasn’t pretty Saturday, but a win in a driving rain storm against an ACC opponent is a win, right? The Midshipmen’s starting quarterback, sophomore Kriss Proctor, made his first start, but didn’t attempt a pass the whole game. Turns out the Middies did not need him to beat the Demon Deacons in the regular season for the second straight year. Fullback Vince Murray ran for a career high 175 yards to help take the pressure off his young quarterback.
Air Force made a run with their upset bid against a top-25 opponent this weekend, but so did Navy hanging tough with Ohio State. Navy gets the nod, though, for its head to head result. Either way, it seems the Middies and the Falcons will continue to jostle for the top spot all year.
2. Air Force (4-4): The Falcons lost a heart breaker against a very good Utah team. They started strong leading the Utes 10-3 after the first quarter. However, Utah’s defense stood strong when it needed to in overtime on 4th and 2. The lost drops Air Force to 4-4 losing two games in overtime against Navy and now the Utes. It will be interesting to see how Coach Troy Calhoun can rally his team against Colorado State.
3. Army (3-5): There is no shame in losing to a well-coached Rutgers team who took any hopes of an upset away from the Black Knights after leading 17-3 at the end of the first quarter. Army struck first with a field goal, but couldn’t stop Rutgers, which scored the next 17 points. Army is off next week giving the team an extra week to prepare for Air Force. A win there would have to give them serious consideration for at least the second spot.
