Chicago sportscaster Daryl Hawks was found dead Thursday in his Atlanta hotel room, where he was covering the NBA playoff series between the Bulls and Hawks.

Hawks, 38, a former Marine, turned to broadcasting after leaving the Corps, working at stations in Jacksonville, Fla., and Palm Springs, Calif., before joining WMAQ three years ago.

Hawks won three Emmy awards. According to his bio on WMAQ’s website, Hawks still was an active athlete, playing football, basketball and golf in his spare time.

Hawks is survived by his wife and two daughters, WMAQ said.
