Navy guard Dowd up for Senior CLASS Award

John Dowd

Navy senior guard John Dowd has inched ahead of Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins (as of late Nov. 1) to take first place in fan voting for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

The award recognizes student-athletes for achievement in four categories while honoring a four-year commitment to their school: community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced before the BCS national championship game.

If Dowd ends up winning the award, it could start a small streak for Navy; last year’s winner was Midshipmen quarterback Ricky Dobbs.

Fan voting makes up one-third of the total score for finalists; you can cast your vote for Dowd here.

Dowd is also featured in the CBS Sports special “A Game of Honor,” which follows the lives of Army and Navy football players as they prepare for their military careers. He’s profiled in this preview as he barrels through the grueling endurance course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.
