The Naval Academy lost two veteran coaches on Monday, both coming as a bit of a surprise. First, it was announced that Billy Lange resigned as head basketball coach to become associate head coach at Villanova. While it’s not out of left field–Lange served under Jay Wright from 2001-2004– it did comes as a shock. Lange told The Capital that he wasn’t forced out and he felt it was the best career move for him right now. He had just finished his seventh season leading the Midshipmen, finishing with a 92-115 record. Shortly thereafter, another press release was…

Navy is on a nine-game win streak against its rivals on the gridiron, but when it comes to lacrosse, Army has its own streak going. The visiting Black Knights defeated the Mids 14-9 on Saturday (April 16), earning them a bid to the Patriot League tournament and their fourth consecutive win over their rival. What’s more impressive is that according to the game notes, the Army Class of 2011 is the first to beat Navy four times in the program’s 94-year history. Army will close out the regular season at Holy Cross on April 23, and then look to defend…

[HTML1] Down by 12 at halftime, the Navy women’s basketball team rallied and took down visiting American 47-40 to win the 2011 Patriot League Tournament. Navy freshman Jade Geif was named tournament MVP,  notching 16 points and 10 rebound in the title game. The victory earned them their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since joining Division I in 1991. The Mids learn their fate tonight when the selections are announced at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The last time a service academy women’s basketball team made the tourney was in 2006, when the late Maggie Dixon led Army to…

The top-seeded Navy women’s basketball team hosts No. 3 American in the Patriot League tournament final tomorrow. The game will be broadcast at 6 p.m on CBS College Sports. So what makes this interesting? Let me list the reasons: – Neither school has ever won the Patriot League tournament. – Neither team has ever advanced to the NCAA tournament and an automatic bid is on the line. – This is only the third appearance in the championship game for Navy, who is 0-2 all time with their last appearance coming in 1999. – American is 0-3 in the tournament final,…

Here’s a quick video of Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs after the Midshipmen’s win this past Saturday. He’s now a man on a mission to get Navy to 10 wins. The Philadelphia Inquirer has a great story about Thomas J. Hudner Jr., a retired Naval aviator and only living Naval Academy graduate to be awarded the Medal of Honor, who will be at midfield for the coin toss of the Army-Navy game tomorrow. While the game is about sportsmanship and bragging rights, stories like this remind everyone of what these cadets and Midshipmen will face once they leave their respective academies. Hudner himself is interesting because of how his career intersected with history. Definitely worth reading.

It’s week 10 in the college football world and the beginning of the college basketball season.  Here’s what’s going on at Army, Navy and Air Force. Navy Football vs. Central Michigan – 3:30 p.m. EST: After absolutely throttling (76 points!) East Carolina on the road last week, the Mids return home to host the Chippewas, who are coming off a 26-22 win over rival Western Michigan. You might think that Navy will run away with this game after last week, but Ricky Dobbs is doubtful for Saturday. Without Dobbs at the helm, this one may be much more interesting. Basketball…
