Navy senior guard John Dowd has inched ahead of Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins (as of late Nov. 1) to take first place in fan voting for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The award recognizes student-athletes for achievement in four categories while honoring a four-year commitment to their school: community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced before the BCS national championship game. Navy, at 5-0, and Army, at 4-1, reside at the top of this week’s Collegiate Sprint Football League standings. The CSFL, which includes teams from Army, Navy, Mansfield University (Pa.), Post University (Conn.), Cornell, Princeton and Penn, has been in existence since 1934. Sprint football is played just like regular football. But sprint players must adhere to strict weight and body fat standards to be eligible to play. For the second straight year, Army football will play a game on the big-money diamond-turned-gridiron of Yankee Stadium. The Black Knights will take on the BigEast’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m. Army lost to Notre Dame, 27-3, last year at the stadium. The original Yankee Stadium, in existence until 2009, hosted many memorable football games, including the 1928 Army-Notre Dame matchup.
