Our friends over at Battle Rattle, the pre-eminent Marine Corps blog, tell us that Marine Sgt. George “Loaded” Lockhart is teaming up with former Marine and rising UFC star Brian Stann to open an MMA gym. Stann has earned a name for himself in the UFC after upsetting Chris Leben in his New Year’s Day fight at UFC 125. Lockhart, meanwhile, is himself a rising MMA fighter who is also known for his ability to help fighters drop weight leading up to fights. The two plan to co-manage the gym outside Atlanta after Lockhart gets out of the Corps in…

Air Force alum and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Chad Hall got so fired up over his touchdown catch in the Eagles regular season finale that he fired up his Twitter account for the first time since Oct. 7. “Playoff week baby! Win or go home!” Hall tweeted on Jan. 4 . While most Eagles starters sat out the team’s last regular season game because the Eagles had already locked up their playoff position, Hall took full advantage. He caught six balls for 84 yards and even took a direct snap at quarterback against the Dallas Cowboys. What might be most…

It turns out Air Force coach Troy Calhoun really meant what he said.  Despite rumors he was a candidate for both the University of Colorado and Denver Broncos head coaching positions, he remains committed to his alma mater. At a time when the head coaching carousel is at full tilt and coaches like new Maryland hire Randy Edsall will ditch his old team, Connecticut, without even the courtesy of an in-person goodbye, Calhoun is staying in Colorado Springs. His name has been replaced with everyone’s coach-of-the-hour Jim Harbaugh as the top candidate to take over the Broncos. No longer do…

Air Force Cadet 1st Class Jeremiah Baxter had the uneasy feeling of looking up and watching Ace, one of the Air Force Academy’s performance falcons, fly into the Louisiana sky rather than toward the lure the cadet falconer was holding on the field at the Independence Bowl. Ace was scheduled to perform at Air Force’s bowl game against Georgia Tech Dec. 15 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. Ace, however, had other plans. So what happens when one of the falcons flies away and how did the academy find him? It’s not like when your dog runs down the street…

Like his fellow service academy quarterback Tim Jefferson did earlier in the week, Army’s Trent Steelman used his arm, not his feet, to hold off an SMU comeback to win the Armed Forces Bowl 16-14 Thursday afternoon. Steelman completed only two passes all afternoon, but it was the second that iced the game for the Black Knights as the 22-yard completion gave Army a first down with under two minutes to play. Army killed the clock and won its first bowl game since Army beat Illinois in the 1985 Cherry Bowl. The win gave Army it’s seventh win of the…

It has been all Army in the first half of the Armed Forces Bowl as the Black Knights have caused three turnovers and dominated SMU with its triple option attack. Star defensive end Josh McNary scored the Black Knights’ first touchdown after returning a fumble 55 yards. Army linebacker Chad Littlejohn caused the fumble with a hit on SMU quarterback Kyle Padron. It was Pardon’s first of three first half turnovers, as he also threw two interceptions. SMU’s defense hasn’t had an answer for Army fullback Jared Hassin, who has already racked up 48 yards rushing yards. Running back Malcolm…

Unfortunately After Action doesn’t have the travel budget to fly our faithful correspondents to each of the service academy’s bowl games. Thus, I’ll let the journalists who were in attendance provide the game stories. Click here, here or here for a wrap up of Air Force’s 14-7 win last night over Georgia Tech in the Independence Bowl. Like most of you, though, I was glued to my TV despite the protests from my fiance who doesn’t understand how there can be so many bowl games. Anyways, here are some thoughts on the game. — Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson looked…

I know, I know. This year’s (insert sponsor’s name here) Independence Bowl will kickoff in 30 minutes, but it’s never too late for a 10-point preview to the epic Air Force vs. Georgia Tech match up. 1. Don’t blink. You might miss a quarter of football. Both teams feature the option attack and both coaches admittedly plan on throwing few passes. 2. Air Force fullback Jared Tew returns to Air Force’s backfield for the first time since Oct. 18, when he got hurt against San Diego State. The senior has run for over 1,800 yards in his career. 3. Georgia…

As Navy safety Wyatt Middleton lifted up the ball and trotted into the endzone following his first half 98-yard fumble recovery, he said he had the Spirit Spot filmed by two West Point professors on his mind. That’s all the After Action team needed to hear. The Shake Weight is crowned king of Spirit Spots for the 111th edition of the Army-Navy game. Notice at the end how Army majors Stephen Hamilton and Chris Miller dubbed over Middleton’s voice much like those Coors Light commercials. Apparently Middleton didn’t appreciate the humor. He said he added a little bit of flair…
