The Falcons find themselves down 7-0 just after the midway point of the first quarter, and they’ve already turned the ball over. Toledo scored with 6:38 left in the period when Terrance Owens hit Bernard Reedy on a 17-yard touchdown pass. And Air Force has fumbled the ensuing kickoff, too. Keep it here for updates.

Here’s a quick look at this weekend’s games. AIR FORCE (1-0) hosts 25th-ranked TCU (0-1) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Versus). Nothing like running across an angry Horned Frogs team; TCU is still annoyed after last week’s 50-48 loss to Baylor. And it hasn’t lost consecutive games in four years. Some numbers to chew on: Air Force has won 11 of its last 12 conference openers. TCU has won 17 consecutive Mountain West games. The Horned Frogs leave the conference after this season for — as of now — the Big East. TCU quarterback Casey Pachall threw for 251 yards in…

The Navy football team is on the road this weekend, playing Saturday night at Western Kentucky, but Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will not be vacant. The Patriot Classic will feature six games spread over two days, with a doubleheader Friday to be followed by four games Saturday. The event’s organizers say it is intended to honor the military on the weekend of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Most of the teams involved are from the metro Washington area, although there will be a couple of out-of-state schools participating. The schedule is as follows: FRIDAY 5 p.m.:…

It’s that time again. College football is here, and let’s take a look at this weekend’s games involving the service academies. (Note: All times Eastern.) • ARMY opens its season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Northern Illinois (streaming online at ESPN3.com). After last year’s win in the Armed Forces Bowl against Southern Methodist, the first in 25 years, the Black Knights will look to make further strides. Northern Illinois went 11-3 last year, finishing 8-0 and taking home the championship in the MAC’s West Division, as well as winning the Humanitarian Bowl, 40-17, over Fresno State. The Huskies subsequently lost…

New University of Michigan football coach Brady Hoke is walking into a rough situation, taking charge of a program that fell flat on its face a number of times during Rich Rodriguez’s three-year tenure in Ann Arbor. So Hoke, formerly coach at San Diego State and Ball State, wants to instill a fighting spirit in his players. What better way to do it than to spotlight Navy SEALs? No Ron Burgundy jokes here, folks – Hoke has given each one of his players a trident. The players are buying in. “We’ve been studying them a lot,” defensive lineman Will Heininger…

A former Naval Academy runner is back on track, representing the U.S. this week at the Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ensign Andrew Hanko of Montville, N.J., the three-time Patriot League champion in the 5,000 meters, graduated from the academy last month, and he’s been training in Annapolis while he awaits nuclear-power school in Charleston, S.C., which begins in September. Hanko is running the 5,000 in the quadrennial competition; preliminaries are being held Thursday and Friday, with the finals on Saturday. Read more about Hanko in Jane Havsy’s story on the Daily Record of Morris County’s website.

Marshall University announced on its website today that it will play a two-game football series against Navy in 2016 and 2018. The 2016 game will be at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sept. 3; the teams will meet Oct. 13, 2018, in Huntington, W.Va. “We are very excited in the future to host a program with the history and tradition of the U.S. Naval Academy,” Marshall AD Mike Hamrick said. Marshall went 5-7 (4-4 Conference USA) last season. The Thundering Herd are a bit removed from their salad days, where Randy Moss, Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich beat up on…

Dana Holgorsen may have wanted to double-check his straps and chute before taking his initial skydive on Tuesday. Holgorsen is West Virginia University’s new football coach. He was supposed to be a coach-in-waiting for this year, working with incumbent Bill Stewart, then taking over in 2012. But tensions boiled over and Stewart resigned at the end of last week. So, four days later, after the university pulled the plug on a pretty bad situation, Holgorsen found himself skydiving over West Virginia’s New River Gorge with members of the Army Golden Knights parachute team. A chance meeting at a boosters’ event…

It’s official. Navy has confirmed that Penn State men’s basketball coach Ed DeChellis, who guided the Nittany Lions to the 2009 NIT title, will leave his alma mater to become the new men’s basketball coach at Annapolis. The reports started creeping out Monday afternoon from a variety of outlets, including The Patriot-News of Harrisburg (Pa.) and ESPN. DeChellis built a middling program at what is a football school. Let’s face it, football will always be No. 1 in the pecking order in Happy Valley, at least as long as Joseph Vincent Paterno walks among us mortals. But it’s still an…
