President Obama has a lot on his plate now, so you can understand why he might not be so eager to take a couple hours out of his day and deal with the circus known as the Washington Nationals.

Full details of the basketball game in San Diego on an aircraft carrier on Veterans Day 2011 haven’t been released, but there already are plans afoot to hold the event in the following two years. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal this week that the Spartans could play on a carrier in 2012 and 2013.

“When we say freedom, it don’t come cheap.” Those are the words of the great Don King, one of the most flamboyant sports personalities we’ve seen. King says uniformed members of the military and veterans, as well as police officers and firefighters, will get into tonight’s light heavyweight bout between Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich., for free. “For those who put themselves in harm’s way to substantiate and uphold the liberties we enjoy, nothing should be too good for them,” King said. A special marked window will be open at the Silverdome box office…

It’s raining, heavily, in the San Diego area, and that means the river next to Qualcomm Stadium is overflowing, leaving the field a mess. Nonetheless, Poinsettia Bowl officials said tonight that they’re pressing ahead with tomorrow’s bowl game, scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. and air on ESPN. According to The Associated Press, the scene on Wednesday at Qualcomm was pretty nasty, with the field under a foot of water — or more. The rain has forced the teams to practice in ballrooms as opposed to on the field. I’m sure the Mids are excited to be facing this…

The coach who took his team to a bowl game and is getting the worst deal this season is Ralph Friedgen. Not even two weeks after he was named ACC Coach of the Year, Maryland tossed Fridge aside, amid rumors Craig James had let Mike Leach out of the locked tool shed. I guess they forgot about the bad old Mark Duffner/Ron Vanderlinden days in College Park. Friedgen will be on the sidelines a week from today for the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium as Maryland faces East Carolina. Proceeds from the game, the third annual bowl game at RFK,…

You may remember the story of Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was severely injured in an Oct. 16 game against Army. LeGrand was taken off the field on a stretcher, and for weeks the story remained the same: He was paralyzed from the neck down. Some good news came out Thursday: LeGrand has some sensation in his hands, his family said. He does, however, remain paralyzed. On the same day came word that LeGrand was named winner of the 2010 Discover Orange Bowl Courage Award. According to The Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America presents the award…

While Bob Feller’s greatness on the mound won’t go unnoticed upon passing — he died Wednesday — we also should remember his service to our country. Feller, who turned 92 last month, enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 8, 1941, one day after Pearl Harbor. He missed parts of four seasons serving in the Navy, most notably aboard the battleship Alabama for three years. He rose to the rank of chief petty officer and was in charge of a 40mm gun mount. He saw action in the Pacific theater during World War II. On to the obligatory rundown of his…

As the dust settles from Josh McDaniels’ rapid fall from grace in Denver, The Denver Post suggests that Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, a former Broncos assistant, is a candidate for the opening. Notice that Calhoun’s name is the only one mentioned in the story as a possible candidate. Surely someone inside the organization already is floating Calhoun’s name. Calhoun was an assistant for the Broncos under Mike Shanahan from 2003-05, then served as offensive coordinator on Gary Kubiak’s staff in Houston in 2006. At first glance, it seems far-fetched that a Mountain West coach would be looked at as…

Flyovers are cool — wicked cool, in fact. But you know, you want to keep your career alive, too. So two weeks ago, Air Force T-38 Talon pilots do a flyover before the Ohio State-at-Iowa game. Fair enough, happens all the time. And a nice treat for one of the pilots, a Hawkeyes fan who says he’s close to retirement. But, really, don’t hit the scoreboard.
