Your base might have a golf course, but does it have a ski slope? Airmen at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska and Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, can make that claim. Both feature small slopes with only a few runs, but what did you expect, Killington or Aspen? We’re talking about the Air Force here. You can’t invest too much on a ski resort and risk stealing away money from the beloved golf courses. I digress. Both Hillberg Ski Hill at Elmendorf and Iceman Hill at Eielson are busy blowing snow getting ready to open over the Thanksgiving Day weekend.…

This week was a let down. Last weekend featured the Army/Air Force showdown with ESPN Gameday on the sideline and Navy’s historic upset of Notre Dame. This weekend Army, Air Force and Navy all faced opponents they should have beaten. And yes I included Rich Ellerson’s improved West Point squad who faced the Keydets of the Virginia Military Institute. All three came through with a win, although Navy got a scare from the Delaware Blue Hens, who always seem to give the Midshipmen a hard time no matter how far Navy’s football program advances. I still can’t believe the Navy…
That, ladies and gentlemen, is a win worthy of crowing about. Navy eeked out its second win in three years over No. 22 Notre Dame on Saturday, beating the Fighting Irish 23-21 on the strength of Craig Schaefer’s sack for a safety on (onetime) Heisman Trophy hopeful Jimmy Clausen in the end zone with 60 seconds left in the game. The win had several effects. First, it kills any chance that Notre Dame will make a BCS bowl this year. Second, it serves as another probable nail in the coffin of Charlie Weis’ career in South Bend, Ind. Fun times!…
Air Force starting quarterback Connor Dietz broke a bone in his right hand and will miss at least three weeks. The Falcons will not have to turn to an inexperienced backup, though. Sophomore Tim Jefferson will take over for Dietz. He started last year as a freshman and the first three games this year before an ankle injury forced him out. Jefferson has thrown for 319 yards, two touchdowns and one interception this year. He’s also saying all the right things after not getting his starting spot back from coach Troy Calhoun after he returned from injury. “I think the…
Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Hirbstreit will be headed to the Air Force Academy to host ESPN’s College Gameday on Nov. 7 when Air Force hosts Army. It’s the third time the Air Force Academy has hosted Gameday, a college football pre-game show which has become appointment television for any college football fan. Gameday last came to Colorado Springs, Col., in 2002 when Air Force narrowly lost to Notre Dame 21-14. It also came the year before for a special 9/11 broadcast which preceded an Air Force win over Army, 34-21. ESPN will broadcast from the Academy Terrazzo, which…
1. Navy (6-2): It wasn’t pretty Saturday, but a win in a driving rain storm against an ACC opponent is a win, right? The Midshipmen’s starting quarterback, sophomore Kriss Proctor, made his first start, but didn’t attempt a pass the whole game. Turns out the Middies did not need him to beat the Demon Deacons in the regular season for the second straight year. Fullback Vince Murray ran for a career high 175 yards to help take the pressure off his young quarterback. Air Force made a run with their upset bid against a top-25 opponent this weekend, but so…
Expectations skyrocketed after Army beat Vanderbilt in overtime Oct. 10. While its football program doesn’t equate to the Floridas and the Alabamas, Vanderbilt is still a member of the Southeastern Conference, and following a win over the Commodores, realistic bowl talk popped up in discussions amongst West Pointers for the first time in years. The Black Knights haven’t played in a bowl game since it lost to Auburn in the 1996 Liberty Bowl. Unfortunately the equation to earn a bowl bid this year got tougher after wasting a golden opportunity this Saturday in Philadelphia against a beatable Temple Owls team.…
