It’s not a huge surprise, but it’s official now: The North Carolina Tar Heels will be ranked No. 1 in the nation when they play Michigan State in the Quicken Loans Carrier Classic on Nov. 11 in San Diego. The USA Today / ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll was released today, and UNC got 30 out of 31 first-place votes. UNC is loaded this year, and the sailors and other service members watching the Carrier Classic will be seeing some future NBA players go after it on the Carl Vinson. The Tar Heels return all five starters from last season…

The list of famous fans attending November’s Carrier Classic on the Carl Vinson keeps on getting longer. The latest to commit to the game is President Obama, who has accepted an invitation to attend the matchup between North Carolina and Michigan State, the AP reported today. Earlier this week, Hall of Famer and UNC alum James Worthy was announced as North Carolina’s honorary captain for the game. Worthy’s fellow “Showtime” teammate Magic Johnson, an MSU alum, had previously agreed to be the Spartans’ honorary captain. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will also be in attendence. The Veterans Day game on the Vinson…

<div class=”mceTemp mceIEcenter” style=”text-align: justify;”> Now that everyone has returned to their sad, pathetic lives that Lebron reminded us of last night, remember how this all started: At an Air Force base. It seems like five years ago, not last September, but who can forget the throngs of media invading the Air Force Special Operation Command’s quaint gym when the Miami Heat chose to have their training camp at Hurlburt Field, Fla.? Before Lebron James became the first player in Finals history ever ridiculed for tallying a triple-double, James got to work on  his post-up game at Aderholt Fitness Center.…

It’s official. Navy has confirmed that Penn State men’s basketball coach Ed DeChellis, who guided the Nittany Lions to the 2009 NIT title, will leave his alma mater to become the new men’s basketball coach at Annapolis. The reports started creeping out Monday afternoon from a variety of outlets, including The Patriot-News of Harrisburg (Pa.) and ESPN. DeChellis built a middling program at what is a football school. Let’s face it, football will always be No. 1 in the pecking order in Happy Valley, at least as long as Joseph Vincent Paterno walks among us mortals. But it’s still an…

The Naval Academy lost two veteran coaches on Monday, both coming as a bit of a surprise. First, it was announced that Billy Lange resigned as head basketball coach to become associate head coach at Villanova. While it’s not out of left field–Lange served under Jay Wright from 2001-2004– it did comes as a shock. Lange told The Capital that he wasn’t forced out and he felt it was the best career move for him right now. He had just finished his seventh season leading the Midshipmen, finishing with a 92-115 record. Shortly thereafter, another press release was…

Sgt. Dominic Lawrence, a Human Resources NCO from FOB Shank (left) and Frances Sanchez, a Field Rep for University of Maryland University College (right), react as Virginia Commonwealth University scores a basket in the first half of their Final Four game against Butler on April 3 at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan. Frances, a VCU grad, set up a viewing party for anyone interested in watching.  Turnout was low, which was understandable as watching the game live meant being up at 2:30 AM.  Sadly for Frances, VCU’s Cinderella ride came to an end with their loss to Butler.

Newly hired Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory is a 1990 graduate of Oakland University, but in 1985 he started college career at the U.S. Naval Academy. And if there was ever a good year to be on the Navy basketball team, that was it. Gregory ended up playing with Hall of Famer David Robinson as Navy went 30-5. The Mids won the CAA and upset Syracuse in the NCAA tournament en route to advancing to the Elite 8 for the first and only time in school history. Gregory sat down with the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Doug Roberson, who…

Florida State forward and former airman Bernard James stars on tournament darling Florida State who plays VCU tonight at 9:57 p.m. EST on TBS. (AP photo) Other than Virginia Commonwealth University graduates all airmen have a rooting interest in Florida State in tonight’s March Madness docket. One of their own roams the paint for the Seminoles after finishing six years in the Air Force. Florida State forward Bernard James has transformed from an airmen into one of the leading defensive big men left in the NCAA tournament. A high school drop out, James took the long way to college basketball…

Full details of the basketball game in San Diego on an aircraft carrier on Veterans Day 2011 haven’t been released, but there already are plans afoot to hold the event in the following two years. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal this week that the Spartans could play on a carrier in 2012 and 2013.
