I’m spending two days with the U.S. Army race team as they compete at Richmond International Raceway. I’ll also spend some time outside the track to check out the military presence in the lots and midway during a race weekend. Here are a few shots from today’s practice session. It’s relatively quiet at the track as far as crowds go but it’s still early. In the meantime the few fans interested in watching practice and qualifying appear to have their pick of seats. I’ll try to post some photos as things progress and time allows so check back for more…

Three Thursday-afternoon academy sports bits, one per service: 1. Army at Benning, on TV: It’s a little early for Saturday college football, but if you’ve got the itch, scratch it with “Army Spring Football Mission: Fort Benning,” a 60-minute documentary on the Black Knights’ trip to Georgia for a scrimmage at Doughboy Stadium. Catch a short preview here, during which Army head coach Rich Ellerson says the magic words regarding the Benning experience for all Black Knights fans: “It’s going to pay off on Saturdays.” CBS Sports Network will air the doc at 8 p.m. Eastern, according to an Army…
Could the college football postseason be closed to the Army Black Knights and, for at least a year or two, the Navy Midshipmen? A CBSSports.com report says an NCAA task force will propose turning over regulation of the 35-game holiday TV filler known as bowl season to football conferences, leaving the governing body out of everything except sponsorship approval. That means conference would decide how many bowls are played and who plays in them — leaving independent teams such as Army and Navy on the outside looking in. The Navy folks already have a solution in place come 2015, and…
Three quick service academy football hits, before everybody gets their hoops fix this evening: 1. Sullivan Award video. As After Action tweeted earlier this week (Hey, let’s all follow that account, could we?), Army linebacker Andrew Rodriguez was presented with the James E. Sullivan Award on Tuesday, given to the top amateur athlete in the country. It’s an elite club, with names both historical (Army’s Doc Blanchard) and contemporary (Michael Phelps, Peyton Manning and, yes, this guy). Head here for a West Point-produced behind-the-scenes video of Rodriguez at the awards ceremony. 2. Dowd gets his due. A 3.9 GPA. In…
Sure, there might be some other minor football developments scheduled for this afternoon, but here’s three quick military-themed gridiron hits for your Wednesday: 1. Steelman will sit. As reported by Sal Interdonato with the (Middletown, N.Y.) Times Herald-Record and confirmed by an Army football release, junior quarterback Trent Steelman will miss Friday’s Black and Gold spring game at Fort Benning, Ga., with a leg injury. Steelman battled leg and ankle injuries last season and had his Army-record streak of 32 straight starts snapped. Sitting Steelman for the Benning game is a precautionary move, Interdonato reports. “Trent (Steelman) had a good…
U.S. Military Academy second baseman Zach Price was recently named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Collegiate Senior CLASS Award, according to the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal. Price, a senior at Army, is a native of Cantonment, Fla., and one of the Black Knights’ captains. He entered March hitting .303 after his first six games of the 2012 season. A major in systems engineering, Price started the season with a .318 career batting average. The award is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across 10 different sports, according to the award’s…
Here’s a classy move: Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams is recognizing soldiers at Fort Campbell, Ky., and he’s hosting some of them at today’s Super Bowl. Thirty-three Campbell GIs took off early today and made the 300-mile trip to Indy.
What: Army vs. Navy men’s and women’s basketball When: Sat., Jan. 14; women’s game at noon; men’s game at 2:30 Where: Alumni Hall, Annapolis, Md. TV: CBS Sports Network The storied Army vs. Navy rivalry hits the hardwood Saturday in two nationally televised games at the Naval Academy’s Alumni Hall. While the basketball incarnation may lack the luster of the gridiron version, both the men’s and women’s teams are just a couple games into the meat of their Patriot League schedule, and the rivalry should prove a springboard for the rest of the season. The schools’ women’s teams will play…
By now, you know the details — the 2011 service academy football season ended with neither a bang nor a whimper, but with a failed two-point conversion. Air Force’s 42-41 loss to Toledo at RFK Stadium may be remembered for a last-minute bobble (if you want the inside scoop on the play, head here for a great breakdown by Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette), but there’s more to the game, more to Air Force’s season and more to the bowl itself then a moment of failed trickery. The past: Wednesday’s loss capped the Air Force football career of…
