It’s official. Navy has confirmed that Penn State men’s basketball coach Ed DeChellis, who guided the Nittany Lions to the 2009 NIT title, will leave his alma mater to become the new men’s basketball coach at Annapolis. The reports started creeping out Monday afternoon from a variety of outlets, including The Patriot-News of Harrisburg (Pa.) and ESPN. DeChellis built a middling program at what is a football school. Let’s face it, football will always be No. 1 in the pecking order in Happy Valley, at least as long as Joseph Vincent Paterno walks among us mortals. But it’s still an…

The Naval Academy lost two veteran coaches on Monday, both coming as a bit of a surprise. First, it was announced that Billy Lange resigned as head basketball coach to become associate head coach at Villanova. While it’s not out of left field–Lange served under Jay Wright from 2001-2004– it did comes as a shock. Lange told The Capital that he wasn’t forced out and he felt it was the best career move for him right now. He had just finished his seventh season leading the Midshipmen, finishing with a 92-115 record. Shortly thereafter, another press release was…

Navy basketball coach Billy Lange has predictably fallen in love with former Duke guard and new Navy assistant coach Greg Paulus. So says Washington Post’s Rick Maese, who seemingly also fell for the lovable Dukie’s charms. It’s almost like Dukie, oops, I mean Dick Vitale wrote the story. We kid. We kid. After Action was similarly smitten with the blond-haired New Jersey product when he took the time to answer some questions for us when first taking the job. Even though this After Action writer might be a rabid Maryland fan, even I had a brief pang of sympathy…

The newest member of Navy’s basketball coaching staff, Greg Paulus, took a few minutes with After Action to talk about his time at Duke and even his tryout with the New Orleans Saints as he makes the transition to Sail Boat U. AA: Why do you want to coach? GP: I’ve always wanted to be a coach growing up. It’s just a passion of mine and a love I’ve always had even when I was playing in high school and college I always knew I wanted to be a coach. AA: Did you want to coach at a service academy…

Navy basketball coach Billy Lange introduced his seven-man 2010 recruiting class last week. A set of twins and a 5-foot-9 point guard are coming to Annapolis to help lead the Midshipmen to a Patriot League championship and a berth in the Big Dance. The steal of the class has to be J.J. Avila out of Texas. The 6-foot-7 pure passing forward averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block per game. He was named the 35th best player in Texas by Texashoops.com and a Texas Class 5A All-State honoree. Brennan Wyatt also has the coaches excited.…

Army, Navy and Air Force were all losers last night. For Navy, the defeat had significant postseason ramifications. Army’s loss was meaningless as far the  postseason goes, but it does dim their hopes of finally finishing with a winning record. And for Air Force, it was another loss in year that probably can’t end soon enough. Mids on a skid Probably no loss was more painful than Navy’s double overtime thriller against American. Navy’s 80-77 defeat is their second in a row, and it appears to have come in a most painful — and controversial — manner. More importanly, the…
