A hockey team made up of veterans, reserve and active-duty sailors and Marines is taking on a San Diego law enforcement team for charity this weekend. The military Patriots will play the law enforcement Spartans Oct. 19 at the San Diego Ice Arena, with all proceeds from the $10 tickets going to the San Diego Police Officers Association Widows and Orphans fund. A wounded warrior will drop the puck following a pre-game moment of silence and bagpipe performance from the San Diego Police Department. I’m always a sucker for stories that come from my home town, Boston, but this one is pretty neat. Andrew Shaughnessy is a 20-year-old kid in the Army for a couple years now. For a month after his recent deployment to Afghanistan, Shaughnessy performed more service, this time as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, South Boston High School.
