This wasn’t the greatest of seasons for the service academy basketball teams. Air Force won only two games against conference opponents. Army and Navy finished with losing records, and both were bounced in the first round of the Patriot League tournament. Despite the team struggles, there were plenty of outstanding performers at all three schools. So I wondered: Who were the best players out the three schools? Then I wondered: Has anybody ever put together an all-service academy team? Well, yes. Scout.com does it regularly for football. But not for basketball, as far as I can see (and I really…

Both Army and Navy saw their season end tonight in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament. Army, the No. 8 seed, fell at No. 1 Lehigh while Navy, the No. 5 seed, lost to No. 4 American for the third time this season. For awhile, Army looked to be on track to pull off a stunner. The Black Knights led Lehigh at halftime and early into the second half before the Mountain Hawks, led by Patriot League Player of the Year C.J. McCollum, stormed back to win 64-45. McCollum, a freshman, finished with a game-high 19 points. Senior Cleveland…

The Patriot League postseason tournament starts Wednesday for Army and Navy … and could very likely end Wednesday for Army and Navy. Neither team is playing great ball right now, and on paper, neither team has a very favorable matchup. Let’s start with Army. How bad have things been for the Black Knights? Well, their best month of the season came in 2009. Army has dropped eight of their last 10 games to finish dead last in the Patriot. In the process, they blew a chance to secure the program’s first winning season in 25 years. Navy is on a…

Army, Navy and Air Force were all losers last night. For Navy, the defeat had significant postseason ramifications. Army’s loss was meaningless as far the  postseason goes, but it does dim their hopes of finally finishing with a winning record. And for Air Force, it was another loss in year that probably can’t end soon enough. Mids on a skid Probably no loss was more painful than Navy’s double overtime thriller against American. Navy’s 80-77 defeat is their second in a row, and it appears to have come in a most painful — and controversial — manner. More importanly, the…

When Army and Navy met in Annapolis for their first matchup Jan. 23, both squads were 2-2 in the Patriot League. Thanks to a solid showing in their non-conference schedule, Army was seven games above .500 and looked to be a potential Patriot contender. Navy, meanwhile, was well below .500, and had not been very impressive in non-conference play. Navy beat Army that afternoon, and since then, the Mids (13-13, 7-4) have fought their way back to .500 and second place in the Patriot standings. Army (13-12, 3-8) has basically done the opposite, dropping five of six games and plummeting…

Bad weekend for the academy basketball teams. Navy’s three-game winning streak ended. Army lost for the fifth time in six games. And Air Force lost in a historic 43-point blowout. Let’s look at the “Oh No in Provo” first: Air Force’s 91-48 loss to BYU was the Falcons’ worst-ever loss in a conference game. It’s the third-worst loss in the program’s history. After a respectable start to the season, the wheels have been coming off for the Falcons in Mountain West Conference play, where they’re 1-10 so far (after going winless in the MWC last year). Air Force’s offense averaged…

The worse the weather, the better Navy plays. Navy guard Chris Harris scored 40 points last night at Lehigh to help give the Mids a 85-78 win. Harris’ offensive outburst included eight 3-pointers and 12-for-13 shooting from the foul line. The victory was Navy’s third straight and moved the Mids into first place in the Patriot League after a so-so start in conference play. The win was also Navy’s third straight game in front of tiny crowds. Only 329 people made it through blizzard conditions to watch the game in Bethlehem, Pa. Navy’s previous two victories in Annapolis had come…

Anyone who trekked through the snow to Alumni Hall in Annapolis yesterday was treated to quite the offensive outburst in Navy’s 100-91 victory over Colgate. Sophomore forward Jordan Sugars exploded for a career-high 34 points on a 13-17 shooting performance to lead the Mids. Senior guard Chris Harris added 25 points and junior guard O.J. Avworo turned in a double-double by scoring 14 points and notching 10 assists (Navy had 19 assists as a team). It’s the second time this season that Avworo has had 10 assists in a game. Navy is now 10-12 overall and 4-3 in the Patriot…

Not a good week so far for the service academy basketball teams. Both Army and Navy lost their Patriot League games last night. The losses come a day after Air Force lost its 22nd consecutive Mountain West Conference regular season game. Army went on the road and fell to first-place Lafayette. Cleveland Richard finished with a team-high 20 points, and Julian Simmons added 18 to lead the Black Knights. Army (12-8, 2-4) has lost three of their last four games. They play next at Bucknell on Saturday. Here’s the box score. Here’s a game story. Navy took a short road…
