College football fans are used to one-off specialty uniforms — everything from desert camouflage to futuristic shock trooper to whatever Oregon decides to wear this week. But Northwestern’s gear for its Saturday home game against Michigan has drawn some criticism for its design — a flag-themed ensemble with splatters of red all over it that’s supposed to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project. The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off after the final gun, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the WWP. Replicas sold by the school will also benefit the charity — one dime out of…

After the Naval Academy rescheduled a soccer game this week and the Air Force Academy announced it wouldn’t travel to Annapolis for this weekend’s big Navy-Air Force football game, it looked like the government shutdown had completely cast its shadow over service academy athletics. However, the Naval Academy announced late Wednesday that the game against Air Force and would go on. At the time, it was the only athletic contest that remained on Navy’s shutdown-shortened schedule, but the school announced Friday that some games were back on the docket. Even the women’s soccer game at American University, which had been…
Army football fans in search of an uplifting story from this weekend may have to shift focus a bit farther south than West Point. We’ve written about former Army Sgt. Daniel Rodriguez’s inspiring journey from the Afghanistan battlefield to the Clemson gridiron, but his story made the national spotlight over the weekend, airing on the “CBS Evening News.” Rodriguez talks about losing his best friend in battle, dealing with alcohol abuse after leaving the military and his quest to play big-time college football as a 5-foot-8, 175-pounder in his mid-20s. Last week, before his Clemson Tigers moved to 4-1 with…
The Associated Press WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Miguel Maysonet rushed for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns, and Stony Brook dominated Army 23-3 on Saturday to notch its first victory against the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kyle Essington finished 11-for-15 passing for 151 yards for the Seawolves (4-1, 0-0 Big South), and Kevin Norrell added 95 receiving yards in the wire-to-wire win. In the teams’ first meeting, Stony Brook held Army to a three-and-out on the game’s first series and marched 74 yards on four plays, including a 49-yard touchdown rush by Maysonet. The Seawolves recovered all four Army…
Before the big reveal, two quick notes: 1. Betting on sports is illegal in most states. In the one state where single-game sports wagering is legal, many of the places that accept such wagers are very large and very shiny — that is not because they make a habit of losing. In fact, removing money from these locations often requires multiple movie stars. So when somebody says a point spread is “for entertainment purposes only,” it’s best to play along. 2. Legalities aside, compulsive gambling is a serious problem that can ruin your bank balance, affect your security clearance and…
Another one for the “too good to be true” file — recent reports suggesting the Army football team was on track to play Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium in 2013 have been shot down by a Notre Dame spokesman, who told ESPN.com blogger Matt Fortuna that the Irish won’t play the Black Knights in 2013. Fortuna had picked up the initial report from the Times-Herald Record on Friday. The Record cited an unnamed source who claimed the deal for a 2013 game at Yankee Stadium was already done. According to an Army news release from 2011, the Black Knights are…
After Action weighed in Monday on what the resignation of Big East Commissioner John Marinatto might mean to the Navy football program, which will begin play in the Big East in 2015 and was brought in as part of a Marinatto-led football expansion. We weren’t the only ones. Click through for links to four other pieces on the future of the conference, plus some Navy-themed notes on each.
Three Thursday-afternoon academy sports bits, one per service: 1. Army at Benning, on TV: It’s a little early for Saturday college football, but if you’ve got the itch, scratch it with “Army Spring Football Mission: Fort Benning,” a 60-minute documentary on the Black Knights’ trip to Georgia for a scrimmage at Doughboy Stadium. Catch a short preview here, during which Army head coach Rich Ellerson says the magic words regarding the Benning experience for all Black Knights fans: “It’s going to pay off on Saturdays.” CBS Sports Network will air the doc at 8 p.m. Eastern, according to an Army…
If you’re not a fan of the Mountain West Conference, this item is a bit like the old riddle about the tree falling in an empty forest. Except instead of a tree, it’s a cable network. The Colorado Springs Gazette reports The Mtn., the regional all-sports network that was home to six of Air Force’s 13 football games last year as well as scores of contests in other sports, will go off the air for good May 31. When it came to the forest of pay TV, the network barely made a sound outside its home region, leaving the naturally…
Three quick service academy football hits, before everybody gets their hoops fix this evening: 1. Sullivan Award video. As After Action tweeted earlier this week (Hey, let’s all follow that account, could we?), Army linebacker Andrew Rodriguez was presented with the James E. Sullivan Award on Tuesday, given to the top amateur athlete in the country. It’s an elite club, with names both historical (Army’s Doc Blanchard) and contemporary (Michael Phelps, Peyton Manning and, yes, this guy). Head here for a West Point-produced behind-the-scenes video of Rodriguez at the awards ceremony. 2. Dowd gets his due. A 3.9 GPA. In…
