So much for the “Little Admiral.” Corey Robinson, a 6-foot-4, sure-handed wide receiver at San Antonio Christian High School, has committed to play football at Notre Dame next season, according to multiple reports. The son of Naval Academy grad and Basketball Hall of Famer David Robinson, Corey had considered following his father’s path to Annapolis, albeit in a different sport. This Sports Illustrated piece outlines the younger Robinson’s decision-making process — one that steered him away from the academy as the interest from top-tier football programs mounted. Aside from Navy and Notre Dame, ESPN.com reports the soon-to-be plebe freshman had…

Not the hardest of hardcore sports fans? Saw the Orange Bowl score cross the bottom of the screen this morning and wondered out loud, “Say, Clemson’s 3-point shooters must be terrible”? Don’t want to be caught off-guard in the new year? Here are five important military sports dates to circle on your brand-new desk calendar. 1. Jan. 14, rivalry renewal: The first Army-Navy game of the new year takes place on the hardwood, with the women’s hoops teams squaring off at noon in Annapolis, followed by the men’s teams at 2:30 p.m. (both games on CBS Sports Network). Patriot League…
Yes, the Army-Navy game was a classic, with the outcome in doubt well into the fourth quarter. Navy’s win streak continued, a new stadium was welcomed into the rivalry, and the end zones were left intact for Sunday’s Redskins-Patriots NFL game as part of the Redskins’ military appreciation week, which they apparently forgot to tell anyone about. Instead of looking back, let’s look forward: In nine months, the Midshipmen will be back in the national spotlight, taking on Notre Dame. It’s another storied rivalry, but with a twist: The Irish fans in the stands will be Irish. On Sept. 1,…
Here are some photos from the historic Army-Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium.
This process took a lot longer than what I would have imagined. [HTML1]
The Army-Notre Dame game this Saturday in Yankee Stadium might be the most unique college football ticket this weekend. It has all the trappings of bowl game, which is ironic considering Notre Dame needs this win to earn a bowl bid. Good luck finding a ticket for under $80, though. Notre Dame sold out of its ticket allotment Tuesday. Their tickets sold for $175 a piece. Army, the visiting team this weekend, sold its tickets months ago. A quick search on StubHub.com found two tickets at $80 a piece. Those are the cheapest I found Wednesday morning, but they could…
Army will return to Yankee Stadium Saturday night to play Notre Dame for the first time since 1964. Of course, this isn’t the House that Ruth Built, this is the new Yankee Stadium, or should I say the House that $10 Beers Built. This match-up in the Bronx should rekindle memories of the early 20th-century when the two teams had to find bigger stadiums in New York rather than play at West Point to accommodate the crowds of more than 70,000 eager to watch the two college football powerhouses of that age. The New York Times’ Bill Pennington wrote a…
Notre Dame doesn’t stomp Navy anymore — well, except when they do it literally. The Midshipmen humiliated the Fighting Irish on Saturday, handing Notre Dame an ugly 35-17 loss. It was the Irish’s third loss in four years to a Navy program they had once beaten 43 times in a row. But Notre Dame’s biggest embarrassment came on Ricky Dobb’s one-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Notre Dame defensive end Kerry Neal, perhaps upset that Navy’s John Howell actually tried to block him, decided to do a dance on the Mid’s abdomen as he laid on the ground. Alexander Teich had the game of his life against Notre Dame, rushing for a career-high 210 yards and scoring on a well-executed 31-yard screen pass that helped set the tone for Navy’s 35-17 win against the Fighting Irish. Teich started this season as the backup fullback to Vince Murray, who took Teich’s starting job last year after he got hurt. When Murray went down with a knee injury in the Wake Forest game Oct. 9, the 217-pound Teich stepped in, and he’s made the most of his opportunity. Teich has had four touchdowns in the last three games (two rushing,…
First, some encouraging words for the demoralized Notre Dame fanbase. Here’s a healthy attitude to take in the wake of Saturday’s 35-17 drubbing at the hands of Navy: It’s really not that embarrassing for you guys to lose to the Midshipmen. Really, it’s not. Impossible as it may seem, Navy is just the better program right now. Don’t be any more upset about this loss than you would be after losing to Michigan. Navy isn’t anyone’s punching bag anymore. The Mids go to bowl games. They win bowl games. They beat their rivals. They graduate star players and don’t miss a…
