Earlier today we posted Air Force’s first salvos in this week’s spirit spot battle between the Falcons and Navy. Now it’s the midshipmen’s turn. The venerable Backshaft Productions — makers of last year’s classic Old Spice spirit spot and others — are back. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbq-SLyR0N0[/youtube] The Midshipmen of Backshaft Productions have still filmed the best Spirit Spot spoof on the Old Spice commercials, but Army’s submission certainly beats out Air Force’s weak attempt. The Mids just delivered way more zingers than the Old Guard. I’d actually like to see what Backshaft could put together in response to this piece, considering their Geico spoof wasn’t on the same level of their earlier work.

This might do little to console the Mids, but the votes were counted over the weekend and Navy’s submission to this year’s Old Spice war came out as this year’s Spirit Spot of the year. It works on so many levels. Nothing is worse than having witty zingers delivered by a shirtless Mid. It’s just emasculating. Second, it’s timely. Those Old Spice commercials kill After Action every time. And after watching these Mids’ spoof, Old Spice would be wise to try and capitalize…
