Army’s angling for a big finish to its three-year slate of games at Yankee Stadium — a return match with Notre Dame. The Black Knights are booked to face Connecticut in the Bronx in 2014, then Rutgers in 2015 — a rematch of their 2011 Yankee Stadium showdown — according to Army football guru Sal Interdonato’s latest report. But the capper in 2016 is still in doubt — Army athletic director Boo Corrigan told Interdonato that talks with Notre Dame are in the works, but nothing’s been locked in. The Irish downed Army 27-3 on Nov. 12, 2011, in the…

What Army fans need to know as the Black Knights make the trip from West Point to Piscataway: Who, where, when: Army (2-7) at Rutgers (7-1, No. 24 AP, No. 20 USA Today), Saturday, noon. TV: ESPNU (Joe Beninati and Pete Najarian have the call, making this a must-see game for hockey fans in need of a fix.) Gambling is illegal in most states: Rutgers is a 17-point favorite. Momentum shifts: It’s the old story of two teams going in opposite directions, but not the directions you’d expect. Army lost six of seven games before beating Air Force at home…

As unique sporting venues go, it’s tough to top basketball aboard a carrier, even if fresh air isn’t an option. But the flattop festivities in San Diego have overshadowed another classic off-site military matchup this weekend: Rutgers vs. Army football, at Yankee Stadium (3:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network). Far from unique, Army’s visits to the original Yankee Stadium were a yearly occurrence in the mid-20th century, and drew a little more attention than an afternoon slot on a cable network with a three-digit number. For example, take this highlight reel, apparently from the 1927 Army-Notre Dame game (tough to confirm…
More good news for those who have been following the recovery of Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed in a game against Army last season. LeGrand made his first public appearance Saturday at an on-campus fundraiser for the Believe Fund, a charity stood up to help with LeGrand’s medical fees. He rolled on stage to a standing ovation during the comedy show hosted by comedian and Rutgers alum Bill Bellamy. Remember him? The former MTV star is still doing shows and in this case for a great cause. Click on the link here provided by SB Nation for…
Set aside a few minutes aside and watch this interview with Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers defensive tackle paralyzed during an October 2010 game against Army. ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi’s does a masterful job capturing the sadness and hope felt by LeGrand and those around him in the wake of the devastating injury. [HTML1]
ESPN is reporting that Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, paralyzed since an Oct. 16 game against Army, has “full sensation in his entire body and movement in his shoulders.” The 20-year-old junior fractured his C-3 and C-4 vertebrae tackling Black Knight running back Malcolm Brown on a kickoff return. The impact of the collision, which was violent enough to have broken Brown’s collarbone, can be seen here. LeGrand has made slow and steady improvement since the injury. He began breathing without the help of a ventilator in late November, and regained sensation in his hands in December. LeGrand described his…
You may remember the story of Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was severely injured in an Oct. 16 game against Army. LeGrand was taken off the field on a stretcher, and for weeks the story remained the same: He was paralyzed from the neck down. Some good news came out Thursday: LeGrand has some sensation in his hands, his family said. He does, however, remain paralyzed. On the same day came word that LeGrand was named winner of the 2010 Discover Orange Bowl Courage Award. According to The Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America presents the award…
Army fell to 4-3 by losing to Rutgers, 23-20, on Saturday, but the result took a back seat to Rutgers junior defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was hurt in the fourth quarter while making a tackle on a kickoff return. The latest reports say that LeGrand has no movement from the neck down. He is currently hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center after surgery to repair two fractured vertebrae in his spinal cord. During his weekly news conference on Monday, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano didn’t have any updates on LeGrand’s condition. Despite the dire situation, Schiano believes LeGrand will recover.…
Army gave up 14 fourth-quarter points to Rutgers on Saturday and went on to lose 23-20 in overtime Saturday at the New Meadowlands Stadium. The loss drops Army to 4-3, with all three losses coming by seven points or less. Statistically, the Cadets had no business losing. Army outgained Rutgers by 154 yards and sacked the Scarlett Knights’ freshman quarterback 10 times for -78 yards. Overall, Rutgers finished with -1 yard rushing, and Army had more first downs and fewer penalties. But man oh man, the penalties Army did commit were crucial. Army committed three penalties on Rutgers’ first touchdown drive of the second half,…
