Air Force’s road game at San Diego State this past weekend was supposed to be a warm-up before it faced two top-10 teams, No. 4 TCU and No. 9 Utah, in consecutive weekends. Instead, the trip turned into a debacle. Led by a freshman running back who rushed for 191 yards, San Diego State upset the then-No. 23 Falcons 27-25. To make matters worse, Air Force lost starting fullback Jared Tew for the rest of the regular season after possibly breaking his fibula in the first quarter. Outside of quarterback Tim Jefferson, Tew was probably the player the Falcons could…

Air Force laid a 49-27 whippin’ on Colorado State on Saturday, keeping the Falcons unbeaten in the MWC and cementing their place in the AP Top 25. The win, coupled with losses by Miami and Michigan, moved the Falcons up to #23. In another sign of greater national respect for Air Force, they’ve finally made the USA Today Coaches’ poll, where they landed at the #25 spot this week. Record Pts Pv 1. Ohio St. (34) 6-0 1,453 2 2. Oregon (15) 6-0 1,427 3 3. Boise St. (8) 5-0 1,395 4 4. TCU (1) 6-0 1,304 5 5. Nebraska…
Air Force exorcised the demons of seven straight losses to Navy on Saturday in Colorado Springs, beating the Mids 14-6 before 47,565 atFalcon Stadium. The victory was enough to put Air Force in the AP Top 25 after weeks of teetering on the edge. The Falcons are #25, entering the rankings along with Oklahoma State, Florida State and Missouri. Meanwhile, Air Force is still unranked in the coaches’ poll, thanks in part to Northwestern’s deceiving 5-0 record that landed them in the #25 spot. Record Pts Pv 1. Alabama (58) 5-0 1,497 1 2. Ohio St. (1) 5-0 1,401 2 3.…
A week ago an impressive loss at Oklahoma put Air Force on the cusp of being ranked in the AP Top 25. But the Falcons’ less-than-impressive win against Wyoming on Saturday wasn’t enough to vault them into the rankings. Even if Air Force had blown out Wyoming, there’s a good chance they’d still be unranked. A lack of upsets meant only two teams fell from the rankings. And a surplus of unbeaten teams –19 in the Top 25 — made it hard to justify moving a one-loss team into the ranking. It is somewhat surprising that Florida State leapfrogged Air…
Not a big surprise here. Despite appearing in a bunch of unofficial Top 25 lists this summer, Navy did not make the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25. The Midshipmen did receive 12 votes, which I guess makes them 38th overall. Defending champion Alabama is first (yawn), while Ohio State is second (quiet yawn made while falling into semi-consciousness). Thankfully Boise State in 3rd place and TCU in 6th liven up a Top 10 full of predictable BCS powerhouses. Oh wait, you mean Nebraska’s back? That’s really zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Please, please, please let Boise or TCU (sorry, Air Force fans) throw a…
