Eight tidbits for service academy football fans after a busy weekend. 1. Cowboy coach: I’m sorry. Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen apologized Sunday, via a school news release, for his heated postgame exchange with Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun on Saturday — and his postgame interview that all but accused Calhoun of cheating. At issue: When Air Force quarterback Connor Dietz lost his helmet on a fourth-quarter drive and had to miss a play, Christensen said he thought the QB and Air Force coaches may have exaggerated their concern over a possible head injury, giving the Falcons enough time…

What Air Force fans need to know as the Falcons try to bounce back from a heartbreaker: Who, where, when: Air Force (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) at Wyoming (1-4, 0-1 MWC), Saturday, 5 p.m. Mountain time (7 p.m. EST). TV: Root Sports (Tim Neverett and Sed Bonner have the call; check here for channel listings). Gambling is illegal in most states: Air Force is a three-point favorite. Bad-luck Cowboys: For the second week in a row, Wyoming’s defense runs into the nation’s leading rusher. Last week, the Cowboys held Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson to 78 yards on the ground –…

What Falcons fans need to know as Air Force looks for its first Mountain West Conference win. Who, where, when: Colorado State (1-3, 0-0 MWC) at Air Force (1-3, 0-1 MWC), Saturday, noon Mountain time (2 p.m. EST). TV: Altitude network (Bill Doleman and Jay Leeuwenburg have the call). Do I get the Altitude network?: Maybe. Gambling is illegal in most states: Air Force is a 14.5-point favorite. Colorado championship: The Rams downed Colorado 22-17 in their season-opener and the Falcons won’t play Colorado this season, so a win would give Air Force some regional bragging rights. Air Force coach…

Ten quick  links, notes and news bits from the service academy’s football weekend: 1. Honor in defeat. Army junior running back Raymond Maples set the stat book on fire Saturday at Wake Forest, but his 140 yards rushing on just 15 carries (plus a receiving touchdown) weren’t enough to prevent a 49-37 loss — Army’s third straight. It was enough to earn him offensive player of the week honors among football independents. 2. Ground game update. Maples is also sixth on the Football Bowl Subdivision rushing list, averaging more than 135 yards a game. Air Force senior Cody Getz is…

A few quick links to today’s news while our picture-a-day countdown helps you remember the good ol’ days. The really, really ol’ days. MRI for Navy WR. Junior Matt Aiken was scheduled to have his right knee looked at after injuring it during Saturday’s Blue-Gold scrimmage, The Washington Post reports. Aiken, tops on the depth chart at wideout, was second on the team in both receptions (13) and yards (201) last season. Ahead of him in both categories was fellow wideout Brandon Turner, who’s missing time for a different reason; Turner’s not on the depth chart. Falcons fall silent. What…

All good speculative offseason college football posts need a gimmick, and CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd has a great one: Ranking every Football Bowl Subdivision coach’s job security. The 2012 Coach Hot Seat Ratings include few surprises — Nick Saban’s job at Alabama is safe, oddly enough — and they bode well for Air Force head man Troy Calhoun, who joins Saban and 29 other coaches with 0.0 ratings, or “can’t be touched.” That’s an improvement from a 0.5 score last year. Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo went the opposite direction after posting his first losing season at Navy, moving from a 0.5 in…

The Sporting News just released its ranking of all 124 college football coaches. It gives new meaning to the word “complete.” Also, possibly new meaning to the word “long.” We’ll simplify for you service academy football fans: Air Force gets bragging rights, with head coach Troy Calhoun checking in at No. 29. Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo checks in at No. 35, while Army’s Rich Ellerson rounds out the academy pack at 79. The SN folks don’t spell out their methodology, but if you went by traditional metrics — you know, like their records from last year — you’d have the same…

Live in the Washington D.C. region and want to watch the Air Force Falcons up close? Air Force coach Troy Calhoun keeps his team’s practices open to the public and with the team playing in this year’s Military Bowl, Calhoun will relocate Air Force’s practices to D.C. for four days starting Dec. 23. The team will use the fields at St John’s College High School, which is on the D.C.-Maryland border by Chevy Chase. Calhoun’s policy of keeping practice open to the public flies in the face of most NCAA coaches, who close practice for fear of other teams sending…

It turns out Air Force coach Troy Calhoun really meant what he said.  Despite rumors he was a candidate for both the University of Colorado and Denver Broncos head coaching positions, he remains committed to his alma mater. At a time when the head coaching carousel is at full tilt and coaches like new Maryland hire Randy Edsall will ditch his old team, Connecticut, without even the courtesy of an in-person goodbye, Calhoun is staying in Colorado Springs. His name has been replaced with everyone’s coach-of-the-hour Jim Harbaugh as the top candidate to take over the Broncos. No longer do…

The Air Force Academy just issued statements from head coach Troy Calhoun and Athletic Director Hans Mueh in response to the rapid-fire rumors of Calhoun becoming the next Denver Broncos head coach. One Colorado radio station even reported that Calhoun is in contract negotiations with the Broncos. Calhoun says that’s not the case. “Our coaching staff and our families are proud to be a part of the daily lives of our nation’s future officers. We certainly look forward to seeing our seniors graduate in May along with coaching the Falcons in 2011 and beyond,” Calhoun said in the statement. Mueh…
