Army’s angling for a big finish to its three-year slate of games at Yankee Stadium — a return match with Notre Dame. The Black Knights are booked to face Connecticut in the Bronx in 2014, then Rutgers in 2015 — a rematch of their 2011 Yankee Stadium showdown — according to Army football guru Sal Interdonato’s latest report. But the capper in 2016 is still in doubt — Army athletic director Boo Corrigan told Interdonato that talks with Notre Dame are in the works, but nothing’s been locked in. The Irish downed Army 27-3 on Nov. 12, 2011, in the…

Our last black-and-white photo of the countdown. And what a way to go out: As 66-year-old action shots go, it’s tough to get much better. Somewhere in that melee are two Army Heisman Trophy winners, struggling to a scoreless tie against Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium in “The Game of the Century” on Nov. 9, 1946, at Yankee Stadium. Army fullback Felix “Doc” Blanchard fumbled the ball you see floating midframe; it would be recovered by Army’s Glenn Davis. Blanchard, Army’s first Heisman winner, took the trophy the previous year. Davis won it for the 1946 season — Army’s third-straight…
Another one for the “too good to be true” file — recent reports suggesting the Army football team was on track to play Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium in 2013 have been shot down by a Notre Dame spokesman, who told ESPN.com blogger Matt Fortuna that the Irish won’t play the Black Knights in 2013. Fortuna had picked up the initial report from the Times-Herald Record on Friday. The Record cited an unnamed source who claimed the deal for a 2013 game at Yankee Stadium was already done. According to an Army news release from 2011, the Black Knights are…
Before you hit the couch for an evening of carrier-based hoops entertainment, check out the latest edition of “A Game of Honor” from CBS, then get briefed on Saturday’s academy football action (all times Eastern): Wyoming (5-3, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) at Air Force (5-4, 1-3 MWC), 2 p.m. TV: The mtn. (Todd Harris, Todd Christensen; DIRECTV channel 616, check here to find out whether your cable system carries it.) Not a misprint: Yes, perennial mountain-time-zone doormat Wyoming is above .500 in the MWC. In fact, with TCU on its way to the Big XII and Boise State rumored…
As unique sporting venues go, it’s tough to top basketball aboard a carrier, even if fresh air isn’t an option. But the flattop festivities in San Diego have overshadowed another classic off-site military matchup this weekend: Rutgers vs. Army football, at Yankee Stadium (3:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network). Far from unique, Army’s visits to the original Yankee Stadium were a yearly occurrence in the mid-20th century, and drew a little more attention than an afternoon slot on a cable network with a three-digit number. For example, take this highlight reel, apparently from the 1927 Army-Notre Dame game (tough to confirm…
Here are some photos from the historic Army-Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium.
This process took a lot longer than what I would have imagined. [HTML1]
The Army-Notre Dame game this Saturday in Yankee Stadium might be the most unique college football ticket this weekend. It has all the trappings of bowl game, which is ironic considering Notre Dame needs this win to earn a bowl bid. Good luck finding a ticket for under $80, though. Notre Dame sold out of its ticket allotment Tuesday. Their tickets sold for $175 a piece. Army, the visiting team this weekend, sold its tickets months ago. A quick search on StubHub.com found two tickets at $80 a piece. Those are the cheapest I found Wednesday morning, but they could…
Army will return to Yankee Stadium Saturday night to play Notre Dame for the first time since 1964. Of course, this isn’t the House that Ruth Built, this is the new Yankee Stadium, or should I say the House that $10 Beers Built. This match-up in the Bronx should rekindle memories of the early 20th-century when the two teams had to find bigger stadiums in New York rather than play at West Point to accommodate the crowds of more than 70,000 eager to watch the two college football powerhouses of that age. The New York Times’ Bill Pennington wrote a…
